There should be a program taught entirely in English.

Dr. Huynh Wynn Tran, Associate Professor at California Northstate Medical School and Associate Professor of Pharmacy at Western University (USA), believes that for Vietnamese medical degrees to be more widely recognized internationally , Vietnam should focus on postgraduate training, concentrate more on practical training, and require doctors wishing to practice medicine to complete residency training.

This year, for the first time, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy is using SAT exam results as an additional admission method for its medical and dental programs.

"In Thailand and the Philippines, medical training is conducted entirely in English, creating a foundation that helps doctors integrate well and access the world's medical knowledge. If Vietnam cannot immediately implement 100% English-language training, it can gradually transition by testing students' learning outcomes in specific modules," said Dr. Huynh Wynn Tran.

Professor Thach Nguyen, Vice Rector and Head of the Faculty of Medicine at Tan Tao University, also believes that a necessary factor for Vietnamese doctors to practice in the US or Europe is proficiency in English. Next, they must have a continuous learning attitude because medicine changes every day. Furthermore, they must always conduct research and exploration to contribute value to medicine and science worldwide.

Currently in Vietnam, only VinUni offers medical programs entirely in English. The general medicine program at Tan Tao University is taught in Vietnamese, except for USMLE exam preparation courses which are taught bilingually (English-Vietnamese), with an English proficiency requirement of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. Other universities still offer programs in Vietnamese. However, some universities are focusing on developing students' foreign language skills by changing their admissions processes. For example, since 2019, the medical program at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Ho Chi Minh City has added a selection method combining high school graduation exam scores (mathematics, chemistry, and biology) with converted scores from international English proficiency certificates (IELTS 6.0 or higher, or TOEFL iBT 60 or higher). This year, for the first time, the university is using SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) results for both medical and dental programs. Hanoi Medical University is also allocating up to 40% of its enrollment quota to a combined admission method that considers the scores of the three subjects (mathematics, chemistry, and biology) from the high school graduation exam along with international certificates in English or French, applicable to medical and dental programs.

The USMLE preparation courses for the General Medicine program at Tan Tao University are taught bilingually in English and Vietnamese, and the English proficiency requirement is IELTS 5.5 or equivalent.

Dr. Huynh Wynn Tran stated that the United States currently has approximately 660,000 doctors. Of these, 180,000 graduated from medical schools outside the US, accounting for about 26.15%. In reality, US medical schools do not train enough doctors to meet the national demand. The average salary after completing a residency program is $170,000 - $250,000 per year (approximately 4.3 - 6 billion VND).

"Doctors graduating from universities outside the US will find it difficult to get residency in fields such as diagnostic imaging, dermatology, anesthesiology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and orthopedic trauma. However, internal medicine, family medicine, psychology, and pediatrics are specialties that doctors graduating in the US don't favor, so these are fertile ground for doctors graduating from universities outside the US to compete," Dr. Wynn Tran explained.
