Neuer cut his sleeves shorter. |
According to The Sun , Neuer appeared on the pitch in Houston wearing a long-sleeved jersey, but the sleeves had been shortened. This seemingly harmless action was in violation of FIFA regulations regarding match attire.
Specifically, FIFA Law 4 stipulates that players must use the original jersey approved by the organizing committee and are not allowed to arbitrarily change or shorten the sleeves. In addition, if wearing an undershirt, its color must match the main color of the outer garment.
In this match, Neuer wore a green goalkeeper jersey, but his undershirt was white. This means the veteran German goalkeeper violated yet another rule regarding match attire.
However, such incidents rarely result in post-match penalties. Typically, the referee will ask the player to leave the field to adjust their attire if a violation is detected during the match. This, however, did not happen with Neuer in the match against Curacao.
In the recent match, Neuer set a record for the most appearances in World Cup history with 20 matches, equaling Hugo Lloris's (France). However, he also received an unwanted statistic: he became the first goalkeeper to concede goals in all five World Cups he has participated in.
