Recently, the Russian military has widely used unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to focus attacks on convoys transporting troops, weapons, equipment, and supplies to Ukrainian units entrenched in Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, and other locations, causing significant difficulties for the opposing forces.
To counter the Russian blockade and reopen supply routes, Ukrainian Defense Minister Fedorov announced that more than 25km of anti-drone air defenses have been installed along roads in two strategically important areas of the Donetsk region still under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The head of Ukraine's Ministry of Defense stated that approximately 1 kilometer of road is being equipped with an air defense network every day.
In addition to the Donetsk region controlled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, these networks are also being installed in other areas still held by Ukraine in the Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson regions.
Since the beginning of this year, Ukrainian authorities are believed to have installed more than 371km of anti-UAV netting along key logistics routes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in frontline areas.
The Russian military also found ways to thwart Ukraine's intentions, the first of which was to "clear" these anti-drone networks or at least create large gaps to pave the way for kamikaze drones to attack convoys on the road.
Ukrainian media outlets on May 21 published a video showing a Russian Molniya drone dropping a thermite mixture to destroy anti-drone nets installed on supply routes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Kostiantynivka.
The footage shows the Molniya drone flying in a straight line, seemingly above a road protected by a UAV shield, creating gaps that the FPV drone could easily exploit to attack enemy equipment.
This video may have been filmed from the position of Ukrainian fighters who were being resupplied via this very route.
As seen in the footage, one of the Ukrainian soldiers finally shot down the Molniya drone with a rifle, but the Russian UAV had already cleared a significant distance beforehand, leaving it unprotected against other suicide drones.
