Western Ukraine under attack

Kyiv said on August 11 that Russian forces fired four Kinzhal hypersonic missiles at an airport in western Ukraine, in attacks that killed at least one child.

"One Kh-47 missile was shot down in the Kyiv region. The rest fell in the area near the airport. Civilian facilities and infrastructure were hit, one of the missiles fell in a residential area," the Ukrainian air force said in a statement, according to AFP.

Fierce fighting has mainly taken place in Ukraine's industrial east, but Moscow has also carried out occasional attacks targeting infrastructure in the west of the country.

Prosecutors earlier said the missile fell on a residential house in Ivano-Frankivsk province, killing an eight-year-old boy.

The Kinzhal missiles are part of an arsenal that Russian President Vladimir Putin has said is indestructible because of their speed.

Ukraine's air force said Russia launched the missiles from Tula, about 180 km south of the Russian capital Moscow, and from Lipetsk, about 460 km from Moscow.

Russia increases pressure in northeastern Ukraine

Russia announced on August 11 that it had improved its fighting positions around the city of Kupiansk in the Kharkiv province in northeastern Ukraine, after Ukrainian authorities called on thousands of local residents to evacuate.

Ukraine regained control of Kupiansk and surrounding areas last September, but Moscow has since sought to push Kyiv forces back in the area.

TASS quoted Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov as saying that the country's military units "continued offensive operations on a wide front and improved the tactical situation" in Vilshana and Pershotravneve, two areas east of Kupiansk.

Sergiy Cherevaty, a spokesman for eastern Ukrainian forces, said the situation around the city was "difficult, given the strength of the enemy, but under control".

Ukrainian officials in Kupiansk on August 10 urged about 12,000 residents of 37 settlements between the city and the Russian-controlled border to evacuate, signaling that fighting could intensify.

Ukrainian defense officials say Russia stepped up its attacks in Kupiansk to draw Ukrainian forces away from Kyiv's own counter-offensive.

Ukrainian president dismisses all local military recruitment leaders

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on August 11 that he had dismissed the leaders of all military recruitment centers in the country's provinces, amid concerns about corruption, Reuters reported.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky

A review of Ukraine’s military recruitment centers found signs of abuses ranging from illegal enrichment to transporting eligible men across the border despite wartime bans, Mr Zelensky said, suggesting such actions could amount to treason.

Kyiv has made fighting corruption one of its top priorities as Ukraine battles Russia and seeks to join the European Union (EU).

Ukraine announced it had foiled a plot to assassinate President Zelensky.

Mr Zelensky said Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian army Valery Zaluzhny would be responsible for implementing this decision and new candidates for the above positions would first be carefully vetted by Ukraine's internal security agency, the SBU.

UAV shot down while approaching Moscow

The Russian Defense Ministry said on August 11 that its air defense forces shot down a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) approaching Moscow, according to Reuters. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote on Telegram that the UAV was intercepted and the debris fell northwest of the city center, causing no damage.

But Moscow’s Vnukovo airport and Kaluga airport, about 150 kilometers from the Russian capital, were temporarily shut down. Authorities closed the airspace at the two airports, stopping all incoming and outgoing flights, but later restored normal operations. This has been a common measure in drone attacks in recent weeks.

Kyiv has never publicly acknowledged being behind the attacks that have occurred on Russian territory. But Andriy Yusov, a spokesman for Ukraine’s military intelligence agency HUR, told the Kyiv Post on August 11 that people living in Moscow should expect more attacks to come.
