Blessed with a geographical location that serves as a "pivot" to the North Central coastal region, Nga Son, like other localities in Thanh Hoa province and the entire country, has faced numerous difficulties in recent years due to factors such as epidemics, the global economic downturn, climate change, fluctuating fuel prices, and unstable agricultural markets. These factors have significantly impacted production, business activities, and the lives of the local people.
However, thanks to the efforts, initiative, creativity, appropriate solutions, overcoming difficulties, and high determination of the entire political system, business community, and people in the district, in 2023, the socio-economic, educational, and national defense and security sectors in the district still achieved many positive results and created a foundation for development in the following years. According to the assessment of the District People's Committee, in 2023, the entire district achieved 3 out of 24 targets and exceeded 18 out of 24 targets.
As a locality that is always innovative and at the forefront of applying science and technology in agricultural production, Nga Son is one of the districts with the highest area of greenhouses and net houses in the province. High-tech agricultural production brings stability and high economic value to Nga Son's agriculture, with agricultural production value in 2023 increasing by 4.8% compared to the same period in 2022. The One Commune One Product (OCOP) program continues to be implemented successfully, and to date, the entire district has 37 products recognized as OCOP products.
Regarding fisheries exploitation, Nga Son currently has 169 vessels registered in the national fisheries system, with no fishing vessels violating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing regulations. In 2023, the total aquaculture area in the district reached 1,800 hectares. The total estimated production of exploited and farmed aquatic products was 13,843.5 tons, equivalent to 103.7% compared to the same period.
In the final days of the year, fishermen in Nga Son are still busy preparing for shipments to all over the country. The Hoi Dao ferry terminal in Nga Tien commune, a hub for purchasing seafood from fishermen in the district and the neighboring Hau Loc district, is also bustling with activity.
Ms. Le Thi Tuyet, a small trader at Hoi Dao ferry terminal, happily stated: "Although the economy is difficult and facing many disadvantages this year, fishermen in the area have still managed to maintain their aquaculture farms and regularly supply my wholesale business with about 50 tons of various seafood such as blood cockles, mussels, clams, and button clams every day. Therefore, the lives of the fishermen in the area are stable and increasingly prosperous. I then supply these products to lobster farming areas nationwide, such as Khanh Hoa and Phu Yen."
With its rich potential, Nga Son is a destination for many domestic and foreign investors. In 2023, an estimated 3,604 billion VND of investment capital was mobilized, reaching 180.2% of the plan. Major investment projects were started, such as: the renovation and upgrading of Provincial Road 524 in Nga Son district; several projects were put into operation in 2023, including: the clean water plant in Nga Thien commune, the Nga Son District Party Committee office building; the district general hospital, etc. Many important construction investment projects were implemented in the district, including attracting the Outdoor Gear Vietnam sports equipment manufacturing plant project in Nga Truong commune, with a capital of 37 million USD.
According to Comrade Thinh Van Huyen, Deputy Secretary of the District Party Committee and Chairman of the Nga Son District People's Committee, the remarkable achievements are due to the unity and consensus of the Party Committee, the government, and all officials and people in the district. They have combined and leveraged the strength of national unity, overcome difficulties, and exploited the district's potential and advantages. In the coming time, the district will take advantage of support from the Central Government and Thanh Hoa province to strive to attract investment; develop high-tech agricultural production linked to the construction of new rural areas. Simultaneously, it will develop industry and handicrafts; promote the development of services and tourism linked to urban development, continuously improve and enhance the lives of the people, aiming to make Nga Son one of the districts with rapid and sustainable socio-economic development in Thanh Hoa province.
