Preventing "ticking time bombs"

Implementing traffic safety patrol and control plans, from the beginning of 2026 to the present, the Traffic Police force throughout the province has intensified inspections and strictly handled violations that directly lead to traffic accidents. Through these efforts, many cases of drivers using drugs or illegally transporting and possessing narcotics while driving have been detected.

In June 2026, traffic police and provincial police recorded and processed 14 cases of drivers operating vehicles while under the influence of drugs.

In June alone, the Traffic Police Department detected and handed over to relevant authorities 3 cases involving 4 individuals who violated the law related to drugs; seizing 1.38 kg of heroin, 9.725 kg of methamphetamine, and 1.926 kg of ketamine. At the same time, they detected and issued citations to 14 individuals for driving under the influence of drugs, with estimated fines totaling 152 million VND.

According to Government Decree No. 168/2024/ND-CP, drivers of automobiles who have drugs in their system will be fined between 30 and 40 million VND and have their driver's license revoked for 22 to 24 months.

For motorcycle and scooter drivers, the fine ranges from 6 to 8 million VND if they have drugs in their system or fail to comply with a drug test request from law enforcement officers. In addition to the fine, violators will also have their driver's licenses revoked for 22 to 24 months.

Driving under the influence of drugs is likened to a "ticking time bomb" on the road. Stimulants impair cognitive abilities, reflexes, and behavioral control, making drivers prone to distraction, hallucinations, or inaccurate handling of situations. This is a potential cause of particularly serious traffic accidents, directly threatening the lives, health, and property of citizens.

Despite public awareness campaigns, warnings, and strict enforcement, a segment of traffic participants still deliberately violate regulations, disregarding the law and the safety risks to the community.
