How to best exploit the application of data science and artificial intelligence in education and training, personalize learners to bring about the best educational results and promote lifelong learning is the issue that experts focused on discussing at the symposium on Application of data science and artificial intelligence in education and training organized by the Ministry of Education and Training on the afternoon of August 16.

Personalization and lifelong learning

At the conference, sharing about AI applications in teaching support, Dr. Tran Viet Hung - founder and Chairman of Got It said that artificial intelligence applications can support teachers a lot, from coming up with ideas, building detailed teaching plans, grading and giving detailed comments for each student, translating content into other languages to being a teaching assistant and tutor for students or creating rich and personalized teaching content.

This is also the opinion of Dr. Bui Quoc Trung, Hanoi University of Science and Technology. According to Mr. Trung, teaching can improve quality and personalization thanks to artificial intelligence and this is also what Vietnam is aiming for, not only in higher education but also in general education.

According to Mr. Trung, with the trend of online and lifelong learning, it is necessary to promote online learning activities along with the application of big data analysis techniques to improve the quality of teaching and learning. Accordingly, Mr. Trung proposed that the Ministry of Education and Training build online courses for common modules of universities and other educational institutions; integrate data analysis tools to monitor, analyze and promote effective learning; publish courses and analysis for training units participating in the system.

Also concerned about the issue of connecting and sharing common data, Associate Professor Ta Hai Tung, Principal of the School of Information and Communication Technology, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that connecting and sharing data is an inevitable trend of the times. Therefore, Mr. Tung believes that Vietnam needs to improve policies and develop a platform for accessing and sharing data to serve socio-economic development.

“For the education sector, openness is a principle, not an option, and should be at the forefront of sharing open data,” Associate Professor Ta Hai Tung emphasized.

Sharing this view, the representative of Khan Academy Vietnam said that open courseware (OCW), open educational resources (OER) and massive open online education (MOOCs) have been playing positive roles in education, contributing to creating learning opportunities for anyone, anywhere.

Need to start now

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son stated that education is one of the sectors most affected by digital transformation in general and artificial intelligence in particular, but it is also the sector that benefits the most. Not only applying artificial intelligence in management and teaching, the education sector also participates in human resource development and research to create technologies and products in this field.

Accordingly, Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son affirmed that artificial intelligence is both an opportunity and a challenge for the industry. If the education sector does not research and apply it, it will fall behind, but if it researches urgently and has an appropriate approach, it will take advantage of the advantages of artificial intelligence to implement effective and low-cost educational activities. “In the field of education, we need to start right away,” Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son emphasized.

According to Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son, to effectively implement digital transformation, it is necessary to have data and continuously update and supplement data. In addition, it is necessary to research mechanisms and policies; pay attention to training teachers and managers; equip knowledge and guide the exploitation and use of tools for students of a certain age, at different levels.

Besides the positive aspects, at the conference, Professor Ho Tu Bao - Director of the Data Science Laboratory of the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, Scientific Director of the BKAI Center mentioned GenAI, ChatGPT and said that when applying artificial intelligence to education, we must think more carefully about the meaning of what kind of people learners will become in a digital world.

Mr. Tu warned that learners may become overly dependent on artificial intelligence applications and limit the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Accordingly, Mr. Tu said that the application of artificial intelligence in education needs to be implemented cautiously, with priority given to ethical considerations and strong safeguards to minimize potential harm./.
