This is a forecast from the 2023 Vietnam IT Market Report recently published by TopDev, a platform specializing in IT recruitment.

Between now and 2025, Vietnam faces a shortage of approximately 150,000 to 200,000 programmers and engineers each year.

Approximately 30% of the workforce meets the required skills and qualifications.

According to the report, the shortage of IT personnel remains the most challenging issue for the information technology market. The current number of programmers in Vietnam is only around 530,000.

Although salaries and bonuses in this industry are increasing significantly, it is predicted that from 2023 to 2025, Vietnam will still face a shortage of 150,000 to 200,000 programmers and engineers annually.

Of the more than 57,000 technology engineers who enter the labor market each year, only about 30% meet the skills and expertise required by businesses. The remaining 70% need additional training within the company for 3-6 months to become familiar with the job and work environment.

According to TopDev's assessment, Vietnamese workers have the ability to quickly grasp theoretical concepts but are limited in practical skills related to the application of high technology.

Regarding recruitment, TopDev noted that many high-growth technology companies have been over-recruiting during and after the pandemic to meet the unprecedented demand for digital goods and services. Although the employment rate in Ho Chi Minh City decreased slightly (2%) compared to 2022, the city still plays a crucial role as a technology hub in Vietnam.

Notably, the majority of employers expect programmers to have at least a basic level of foreign language proficiency, limited to their technical roles.

Besides English, Japanese and Korean have emerged as two common foreign language requirements in recent job descriptions. Employers from Japan and Korea, who seek programmers with foreign language skills, often require a professional level of proficiency.

New employees start at $1,000 per month.

The report shows that the average salary in the IT industry increased only slightly by 0.7% compared to last year, but compared to other industries, salaries for positions related to this sector remain high.

Most positions begin with relatively similar salaries. After two years of graduation, the salary model shifts towards technology-related fields and can be heavily influenced by the job market, economic conditions, and emerging business requirements.

Salaries typically increase as employees advance through the ranks. Programmers with extensive experience and seniority receive better compensation and salaries.

Specifically, fresh graduates in the IT market typically earn an average salary of $435-$514 per month. After two years of work, once programmers have accumulated some foundational knowledge and work experience, their salary increases more rapidly.

Specifically, over 70% of junior positions earn between $600 and $1,000 per month; nearly 50% of middle-level positions earn between $1,100 and $1,500 per month; senior positions earn around $1,100 to $2,000 per month, and only about 10% receive $2,500 or more per month.

Fundamental technology fields like Java, Python, .Net, C++, and PHP have consistently been considered high-paying professions over the years. New, high-tech skills related to cloud computing, AI, ML, and DevOps are receiving more investment and higher salaries due to the significant impact of current real- world applications of cloud computing, generative AI, and modern software development processes.

In the future, due to changes and influences from the socio-economic situation, as well as based on the hard and soft skills that programmers possess, this recruitment platform predicts that salaries in the IT industry will be more clearly categorized.

Therefore, in addition to improving professional skills, soft skills such as growth thinking ability, communication, time management, and foreign language proficiency are also important factors that programmers need to pay attention to.
