Nghe An, the first locality to use IELTS for 10th grade admission, abolished this regulation in this year's 10th grade admission.
Nghe An Provincial People's Committee on March 20 announced the 3th grade enrollment plan for the 10-2024 school year. Accordingly, the province organized the exam on June 2025-5 with three subjects: Mathematics, Literature and Foreign Language (English or French).
Admission score is the total score of three subjects and priority score (if any). Candidates registering to take the exam to Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted will take an additional exam in the corresponding specialized subject.
Unlike the last three years, the plan does not mention direct admission of candidates with international certificates according to the province's foreign language development project.
Last year, Phan Boi Chau Specialized School was able to recruit two grade 10 English majors by combining academic records with a certificate of 6.5 IELTS or higher or equivalent. As a result, 70 students were admitted, all achieving the lowest IELTS score of 7.0, the highest score of 8.5.
In addition to this school, 18 other high schools are similarly accepted by the province, but the certification score requirements are lower.
Before Nghe An, a series of provinces and cities also adjusted their 10th grade enrollment plans.
This move stems from a request from the Ministry of Education and Training at the end of February. The Ministry said that according to regulations, localities are not allowed to directly recruit and add points to candidates who win excellent student awards at the provincial level, with Foreign language certificate for grade 2 admission.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh, Director of the Department of Secondary Education, adding points or direct admission to grade 10 for candidates with IELTS certificates can cause unfairness for candidates in areas with poor economic conditions. economic and social difficulties.
