Alan Dye, Apple's vice president of Human Interface Design since 2015, is set to leave the company . Bloomberg reports that Meta has recruited Dye as part of its strategy to push consumer devices with integrated AI.
Stephen Lemay, who has worked on Apple's design team for 26 years, will take over. Dye informed Apple's senior leadership of his departure this week and officially joined Meta on December 31, although his departure had been planned in advance, according to Bloomberg .
CEO Tim Cook said that design is at the core of Apple and that Lemay has played a key role in the design of every major interface since 1999. “He has always set an incredibly high standard for excellence and embodies Apple’s culture of collaboration and innovation,” Cook said.
In a post on Daring Fireball, John Gruber, a tech blogger and UI designer, also shared some of the internal reactions to the personnel change. He said that despite his low profile, Lemay was praised by many at Apple, especially for his attention to detail and craftsmanship.
In contrast to the warm welcome to his new boss, internal reactions were mixed with satisfaction that Dye was leaving the company on his own. “The detail and craftsmanship that had been lacking during the Dye era was overwhelmingly positive, given that people had given up hope that Dye would be forced out,” Gruber writes.
At Meta, Dye will lead a new design studio and oversee hardware, software, and AI integration across Meta products. Mark Zuckerberg announced the news in a Threads post, saying the studio will “bring together design, fashion , and technology to shape the next generation of products and experiences.”
Bloomberg reports that Apple’s vice president of design, Billy Sorrentino, will also be leaving the company to join Meta. Gruber alluded to a rumor that other members of Dye’s inner circle will also be leaving Apple to join him at Meta.
Dye’s role at Apple has expanded significantly since Jony Ive left in 2019. Most recently, he oversaw the “Liquid Glass overhaul” in iOS 26 and personally introduced the new design language at WWDC in June. He also played a key role in the design of Apple Vision Pro and the visionOS operating system.
The departures are just the latest in a long line of high-level changes at Apple. Most recently, John Giannandrea, senior vice president of AI, will leave his post and officially retire in the spring of 2026. COO Jeff Williams retired last month, along with CFO Luca Maestri.
Tim Cook could also leave as early as next year, multiple sources say. Apple has also lost a large number of designers to Jony Ive’s design firm LoveFrom, as well as OpenAI, both of which are developing AI-powered hardware under the “io” brand.
