From around 7-8 a.m., at Thach Lac commune beach, boats line up to dock. During the peak herring fishing season, each boat can harvest an average of 5-7 quintals of fish; some particularly successful boats can catch 1-1.5 tons. As soon as the boats docked, groups of fishermen busied themselves untangling their nets. Mr. Nguyen Duc Nho (Bac Lac village, Thach Lac commune) shared: “ My boat has a capacity of less than 30 horsepower, and on average, each fishing trip catches more than 500 kg of herring, bringing in over 4 million VND. The fresh herring is bought on the spot by traders as soon as it arrives at the dock, making it very easy to sell and giving us peace of mind to go out to sea and continue our fishing activities .” After being removed from the nets, the herring are washed with seawater and sold at the shore for 8,000 - 9,000 VND/kg. In Tien Dien commune, from the beginning of March until now, the seafood harvesting activities of fishermen have been more vibrant as they enter the peak season for herring.
On the coast, the atmosphere is bustling with activity. According to locals, the herring that arrive at the docks need to be processed promptly to maintain their freshness. These herring, with their shimmering silver bodies, clear eyes, bright red gills, and firm flesh, are highly sought after in the market. Mr. Tran Van Thanh (a fisherman from Tien Dien commune) enthusiastically said: “ The herring fishing season usually lasts from around February to May every year. This is also the time when we are preparing for the tourist season, so the demand for seafood is high. Therefore, we take advantage of going out to sea to both earn extra income and contribute to ensuring the supply for the market ." In the waters off Hai Ninh ward, over the past few days, boats have docked bringing in a bounty of fresh seafood, with many catching large quantities of sardines. This type of fish belongs to the herring family, has a flattened body, thin, silvery scales, and soft, fatty, and nutritious flesh.
As soon as they dock, to keep the fish fresh, the fishermen quickly sort them and arrange them in plastic trays, making them convenient for unloading and sale. "My family's boat usually fishes 5-10 nautical miles from shore. On average, each trip yields 8-9 quintals of sardines, and some successful trips can bring in nearly 1.5 tons. Sardines are purchased at 14,000-15,000 VND/kg, and after deducting expenses, we earn 8-12 million VND," shared Ms. Tran Thi Tinh (Tien Thang residential area, Hai Ninh ward).
Mr. Nguyen Duc Ha (a seafood trader in Hai Ninh ward) said: "After sorting, the sardines are frozen and transported for sale. This type of fish has tender, fatty meat and is reasonably priced, so it is very popular in the market." The abundant catches of sardines and herring not only bring significant income to fishermen but also contribute to the vibrant seafood purchasing and consumption activities, creating an atmosphere of excitement as the beach tourism season approaches.
