In Na Tung village, Xuan Duong commune, people are actively inspecting their forests and proactively spraying to control pine caterpillars these days. Ms. Luong Thi Cau, a resident of Na Tung village, said: "My family owns over 1 hectare of pine trees. During this inspection, I discovered that pine caterpillars have appeared throughout the entire area. I reported it to the local authorities and received guidance on how to control them."
Similar to Mrs. Cau's household, residents in Xuan Duong commune are currently actively spraying to control pine caterpillar infestations. Mr. To Bach, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Xuan Duong commune, said: The entire commune has over 6,000 hectares of pine trees. Currently, the area infested with caterpillars is about 10 hectares, with a common density of 15-20 caterpillars per tree, and up to 50-60 caterpillars per tree, with caterpillars aged 1 to 3 years. To control the infestation, the department has coordinated with relevant units to investigate pests and diseases, and to educate and encourage people to regularly inspect the forest and proactively purchase pesticides to spray in areas affected by the pests, as recommended by the Agricultural Service Branch.
Authorities recommend that people proactively inspect their forests and detect pine caterpillars early to take timely and effective control measures. When a caterpillar density of 35 or more caterpillars per tree is detected, farmers should spray with biological pesticides such as VTB USA, Bitadin, Boverin, Enasin 32 WP, etc., to prevent widespread infestation. It is best to spray in the early morning or late evening when the weather is cool and shady. |
According to the results of the crop pest survey by the Loc Binh Regional Agricultural Service Branch, pine caterpillars have had 4 generations. From the beginning of the year to September 2025, the total area affected by caterpillars was 61 hectares, distributed in Xuan Duong, Loi Bac, and Loc Binh communes. From November 2025 to the present, the area affected by pine caterpillars is approximately 10 hectares, mainly in Xuan Duong commune.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Thuan, Director of the Loc Binh Regional Agricultural Services Branch, said: To prevent caterpillar infestations from becoming an epidemic, the unit has directed its professional staff to strengthen regular and continuous disease investigation work, coordinating with the People's Committees of communes in the area to inspect and guide people on control measures. Thanks to this, to date, infected areas have been and are being sprayed with insecticides, the damage rate is low, and no epidemic has broken out.
According to forecasts from specialized agencies, the coming period will see alternating sunny and rainy days, with foggy nights and mornings. These conditions are conducive to the development and damage caused by pine caterpillars. Therefore, the People's Committees of the communes and specialized agencies should continue to strengthen their forecasting and prediction efforts to implement appropriate control measures; and encourage people to actively monitor the forests and spray pesticides when pests are detected, preventing widespread infestations.
