Nepalese mountain guide Kami Rita Sherpa conquered Mount Everest for the 32nd time on May 17th, breaking the record he himself set last year. To date, he is the person who has climbed Mount Everest the most times in history, according to Reuters .

Nepalese officials said Kami Rita, 56, reached the summit of Mount Everest, 8,849 meters high, at 10:12 a.m. on May 17 while leading a group of tourists from 14 Peaks Expedition. The Nepal Tourism Board congratulated him on achieving this "historic milestone" and acknowledged his contributions to the country's mountaineering tourism industry.

On the same day, 52-year-old Nepalese Sherpa Lakhpa also completed her 11th Everest ascent – the most by a woman in the world . Officials have not released further information about her journey.

Kami Rita was born in Thame village, Solukhumbu district, the hometown of Tenzing Norgay, who, along with New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary, first conquered Everest in 1953. He first climbed Everest in 1994 and returned to the mountain almost every year, except for 2014, 2015, and 2020 when climbing was suspended for various reasons. In one year, Kami Rita ascended Everest twice.

Since Everest was first conquered in 1953, more than 8,000 people have climbed the mountain, many of them making the trek multiple times. Among non-Sherpa climbers, the record currently belongs to British guide Kenton Cool with 19 ascents. American climbers Dave Hahn and Garrett Madison are tied for 15 each.

Sherpas are an ethnic minority community living in the mountainous regions of southern Nepal, originating from Tibet hundreds of years ago and concentrated mainly around the Everest area. They are renowned for their ability to adapt to the high-altitude environment, where the air is thin and oxygen levels are low – conditions that many people take days, even weeks, to adjust to.

Sherpas have long been known for their roles as guides, porters, and support staff for mountaineering expeditions in the Himalayas. Guiding foreign climbers to Everest and other peaks is a vital source of income for many indigenous Sherpas.

During this year's climbing season, which runs from April to May, Nepal issued a record 492 Everest climbing permits at a fee of $15,000 per person, surpassing the 478 permits issued in 2023. For Nepal – a country heavily reliant on tourism – climbing provides a vital source of income and employment for local people.

Nepal currently boasts over 400 peaks in the Himalayas, but only about 20 regularly attract international climbers. The increase in the number of Everest climbers in recent years has also raised concerns about overcrowding and safety issues on the journey to the "roof of the world." Three Nepalese climbers have died on the mountain in the past month.
