Nguyen Filip and his profound sadness
The 2024 Southeast Asian Football Championship (AFF Cup) was a tournament where the Vietnamese national team made a strong impression, winning their third title in history. For Nguyen Filip, it was his first championship with the Golden Star team since becoming a naturalized citizen, but it also marked a low point for the goalkeeper of Vietnamese and Czech descent. During Vietnam's journey to winning the 2024 AFF Cup, he only played in two matches (out of a total of eight). Nguyen Dinh Trieu was the main character, shining brightly and winning the award for best goalkeeper in the region.
During the FIFA Days in March, Dinh Trieu continued to be trusted when he helped the Vietnamese national team defeat Cambodia (friendly) and win against Laos (first match of the final qualifying round for the 2027 Asian Cup), while Nguyen Filip was absent due to personal reasons. However, losing the number one goalkeeper position under coach Kim Sang-sik did not discourage him. Instead, the 1992-born goalkeeper has continuously strived to regain his form and prove his ability in the V-League and the 2024-2025 Southeast Asian Champions League while playing for Hanoi Police FC. The 33-year-old goalkeeper played exceptionally well, especially in the regional tournament, where the police team was unable to win the championship due to a lack of luck compared to the top Thai club, Buriram United.

Nguyen Filip's efforts paid off when he was rewarded with the starting goalkeeper position for the Vietnamese national team against Malaysia last night, June 10th. This was a crucial match for Coach Kim Sang-sik's team in their goal of qualifying for the 2027 Asian Cup. Coach Kim's trust in Nguyen Filip in this match is understandable. With the Vietnamese-born goalkeeper in top form, he was the most logical choice to face a transformed Malaysia team with many tall, physically imposing naturalized players who frequently rely on aerial balls. Compared to Dinh Trieu, Nguyen Filip has an ideal physique with a height of 1.92m and a long reach. Not only is he strong in aerial duels, but Nguyen Filip also excels in his footwork and ability to initiate quick attacks, perfectly suited to Vietnam's counter-attacking style of play. He did not disappoint Coach Kim Sang-sik, at least in terms of his individual performance.
Analyzing Vietnam's defeat against Malaysia: Naturalization and what else?

Nguyen Filip's emotional post received an enormous amount of interaction in less than an hour.

On at least four occasions in this match, Nguyen Filip transformed into a "spider-man," saving seemingly certain goals. It's safe to say he was the best player on the Vietnamese team. However, that wasn't enough to prevent Coach Kim's team from suffering a 0-4 defeat against a much stronger Malaysia, boasting players of Brazilian and Argentinian origin. To be fair, Nguyen Filip was good… but he still lacked luck in the Vietnamese national team jersey. This is reminiscent of the early days after his naturalization, when the Golden Star team was led by his predecessor, Philippe Troussier.
Following the defeat against Malaysia on the evening of June 10th, this morning, Nguyen Filip posted a heartfelt message on his personal page: "A painful lesson."
The audience can understand his feelings right now!
