"This will probably be the last tournament of my athlete life. I will start a new chapter, that is, a coach," Nguyen Thi Huyen shared after completing the 400 meter event at the 2023 National Athletics Championship this morning (October 24).

The athlete born in 1993 announced her retirement after winning the gold medal with a time of 52.92 seconds. She may still participate in other events at the 2023 national championship (taking place in Mieu Mon, Hanoi ). These will be Nguyen Thi Huyen's last steps in her competitive career.

"I feel that during the training process, I have deteriorated a lot. My health cannot serve the exercise. I have shared many times that I will practice until I am no longer able to. As an athlete who has competed for more than ten years, I can feel that my health is deteriorating," Nguyen Thi Huyen shared.

In addition, taking care of family is also an important reason why the SEA Games champion decided to retire at this time.

Nguyen Thi Huyen said: "I have been married for 5 years. My daughter is now 5 years old. I am also a woman, a mother, it is time for me to return to my family."

Nguyen Thi Huyen is a monument of Vietnamese athletics. Since 2015, Nguyen Thi Huyen has consistently won at least 2 gold medals for the Vietnamese sports delegation at every SEA Games. She and Nguyen Thi Oanh are the 2 athletes who have won the most gold medals in athletics at the SEA Games.

Nguyen Thi Huyen added: "After I retire, Quach Thi Lan (banned from competing due to violating anti-doping regulations) will return. The young athletes are also improving every day. Next year, through each tournament, they will improve a lot and who knows, maybe their dream of going to the Paris Olympics will come true."
