"This will probably be the last competition of my athletic career. I will be starting a new chapter, that of being a coach," Nguyen Thi Huyen shared after completing the 400-meter event at the 2023 National Athletics Championships this morning (October 24).
The athlete, born in 1993, announced her retirement after winning the gold medal with a time of 52.92 seconds. She may still participate in other events at the 2023 National Championships (held at Mieu Mon, Hanoi ). These will be Nguyen Thi Huyen's final races in her competitive career.
Nguyen Thi Huyen retired after the 2023 National Championships.
"I feel that my health has deteriorated significantly during training. My physical condition is no longer sufficient for the exercises. I've shared many times that I will train until I'm no longer able to. As an athlete who has competed for over a decade, I can feel that my health is declining," Nguyen Thi Huyen shared.
In addition, taking care of his family is also a significant reason why the SEA Games champion decided to retire at this time.
Nguyen Thi Huyen said: "I've been married for five years. My daughter is now five years old. I'm also a woman, a mother, and it's time for me to return to my family."
Nguyen Thi Huyen is a legend of Vietnamese athletics. Consistently from 2015 to the present, Nguyen Thi Huyen has won at least two gold medals for the Vietnamese sports delegation at every SEA Games. She and Nguyen Thi Oanh are the two athletes with the most gold medals in athletics at the SEA Games.
Nguyen Thi Huyen added: "After I retire, Quach Thi Lan (who was banned from competing due to violating anti-doping regulations) will return. The young athletes are also improving every day. Next year, through each competition, they will rise significantly, and who knows, their dream of going to the Paris Olympics might come true."
