"This will probably be the last tournament of my athlete life. I will start a new chapter, that is, a coach," Nguyen Thi Huyen shared after completing the 400 meter event at the 2023 National Athletics Championship this morning (October 24).
The athlete born in 1993 announced her retirement after winning the gold medal with a time of 52.92 seconds. She may still participate in other events at the 2023 national championship (taking place at Mieu Mon, Hanoi ). These will be Nguyen Thi Huyen's last runs in her competitive career.
Nguyen Thi Huyen will retire after the 2023 national championship.
"I felt that during the training process, I was getting worse. My health could not support the training. I used to share many times that I would train until I could no longer. As an athlete who has competed for more than ten years, I could feel that my health was getting worse," Nguyen Thi Huyen shared.
In addition, taking care of family is also an important reason why the SEA Games champion decided to retire at this time.
Nguyen Thi Huyen said: "I have been married for 5 years. My daughter is now 5 years old. I am also a woman, a mother, it is time for me to return to my family."
Nguyen Thi Huyen is a monument of Vietnamese athletics. Since 2015, Nguyen Thi Huyen has consistently won at least 2 gold medals for the Vietnamese sports delegation at every SEA Games. She and Nguyen Thi Oanh are the 2 athletes who have won the most gold medals in athletics at the SEA Games.
Nguyen Thi Huyen added: "After I retire, Quach Thi Lan (banned from competing due to violating anti-doping regulations) will return. The young athletes are also improving day by day. Next year, through each tournament, they will improve a lot and who knows, maybe their dream of going to the Paris Olympics will come true."
