These days, in the fields of An Nhon Dong and An Nhon Bac wards, considered the capital of yellow apricot blossoms in Central Vietnam, it's easy to see people busy with pruning branches and leaves. This is an important step to help the apricot trees recover after blooming alongside other flowers and ornamental plants during the recent Lunar New Year.

According to Mr. Tran Van Vinh, caring for apricot blossom trees after Tet (Lunar New Year) is very elaborate and meticulous. Most apricot trees are exhausted after the flowering period, so to restore them, gardeners have to remove the remaining flowers, then prune the branches, change the soil, and fertilize the trees.

"To help the apricot blossom trees recover quickly, we need to prune the branches and leaves early, change the soil, and repot them. This year, our family still has quite a lot of apricot blossom trees, so we have to hire extra laborers to prune the branches and leaves. After that, we will repot them and fertilize them all at once, so that the trees can grow well," Vinh added.

In An Nhon Bac ward, many gardeners are also busy pruning, changing soil, and fertilizing to help their apricot trees recover faster.

According to Mr. Tran Van Phuc, who has over 30 years of experience in growing and caring for apricot blossom trees, after Tet (Lunar New Year), it's necessary to quickly remove weak branches so the tree can grow better. In addition, changing the soil and applying fertilizer appropriately will help the tree recover quickly after the peak flowering period.

“Apricot blossom trees are finicky plants, requiring proper care, especially for recovery after Tet (Lunar New Year). If the care techniques are not ensured, the trees can weaken and have difficulty blooming at the right time the following year. Every day, I have to check each tree individually. If I see any signs of yellowing leaves or pests, I have to treat them immediately to avoid affecting the tree's growth,” Mr. Phuc said.

Those who grow apricot blossom trees are busy with the process of pruning branches and removing leaves.

According to Ms. Ho Thi Hanh in An Nhon Dong ward, last year's unfavorable weather, with storms and heavy rain, caused significant damage to apricot tree growers in the area. Her garden was also severely damaged, especially the larger trees, which suffered damaged buds and broken pots.

“Before Tet, our family hired extra workers to repot, prune damaged branches, and care for the roots of the apricot blossom trees, but the trees didn't recover in time, and a significant number of them were of poor quality. Therefore, traders didn't come to buy as much as in previous years. Even though we couldn't sell them, we couldn't throw them away because apricot blossom trees take many years of care to grow and be sold to enthusiasts. After pruning and removing the leaves, we will replace the soil and pots so the trees can grow again. Hopefully, we can sell them next year to compensate for this year's losses,” Ms. Hanh shared.

According to statistics from the People's Committee of An Nhon Bac Ward, during the recent Lunar New Year, the total revenue from the sale of apricot blossom trees in the locality reached nearly 90 billion VND. Although not as high as in previous years, it far exceeded expectations, especially considering that last year's natural disaster damaged approximately 120,000 apricot blossom trees, resulting in estimated losses of over 80 billion VND.

According to Mr. Nguyen Anh Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of An Nhon Bac Ward, the locality has nearly 150 hectares of apricot blossom trees with more than 450 households participating in production, bringing in revenue of 140-150 billion VND each year. The total number of apricot blossom trees sold during the recent Tet holiday reached approximately 113,000 pots, with an average selling price of 800,000 VND per pot, an increase of about 200,000 VND compared to the previous year. Although this year's revenue did not meet expectations, apricot blossom tree cultivation has brought considerable income to the local people.

Along with caring for the numerous apricot blossom trees in their gardens, many gardeners in An Nhon Bac and An Nhon Dong are also busy providing post-Tet apricot blossom tree care services for their regular customers. This service also brings in a considerable income for apricot blossom growers here.
