Infection due to improper vaginal douching

VnExpressVnExpress25/10/2023

Hanoi A 30-year-old woman went to see a doctor for infertility. The doctor diagnosed her with a gynecological infection that caused bacteria to go upstream and block her fallopian tubes.

The patient told the doctor at the Examination Department of the Central Obstetrics Hospital that after sex she often cleaned her vagina very carefully, including using her hand to wash inside. The couple had been married for many years but had no children.

On October 24, Dr. Phan Chi Thanh said that the patient had an infection and completely blocked fallopian tubes due to bacteria, leading to infertility. The cause was that the patient had improper vaginal hygiene, causing damage to the fallopian tubes and allowing bacteria to enter. The doctor prescribed surgery to re-open the fallopian tubes or in vitro fertilization to help conceive.

The fallopian tubes are an important reproductive organ of women, besides the ovaries and uterus. The fallopian tubes are the path through which sperm swim to fertilize the egg. Long-term infection causes bacteria to run upstream from the vagina to the genitals to the fallopian tubes. When this organ is damaged, it encounters problems such as inflammation, scarring, fluid retention, and blockage, seriously affecting the fertilization and pregnancy process.

"When you first get married, there is no risk of blocked fallopian tubes, so it is easy for couples to get pregnant. On the contrary, long-term infection leads to infertility," the doctor said, advising women to just gently clean the private area on the outside to ensure cleanliness and safety. Absolutely do not put your hand too deep into the vagina, which can cause bacteria to enter and cause disease.

Doctors recommend that married women should have a gynecological examination and screening every 6 months to ensure they do not have sexually transmitted diseases or infections that damage the fallopian tubes.
