Infection due to improper vaginal douching

VnExpressVnExpress25/10/2023

Hanoi – A 30-year-old woman went for infertility treatment, and the doctor diagnosed a gynecological infection that caused bacteria to travel upstream and block her fallopian tubes.

The patient told the doctor at the Outpatient Department of the Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital that after intercourse, she always cleans her vagina very thoroughly, including inserting her fingers for douching. She and her husband have been married for many years but have not had children.

On October 24th, Dr. Phan Chi Thanh stated that the patient suffered from a bacterial infection and complete blockage of the fallopian tubes, leading to infertility. The cause was attributed to improper vaginal hygiene, which damaged the fallopian tubes and allowed bacteria to enter. The doctor recommended surgery to reopen the fallopian tubes or in-vitro fertilization (IVF) to help the patient conceive.

The fallopian tubes are a vital part of a woman's reproductive system, alongside the ovaries and uterus. They are the pathway through which sperm travel to fertilize the egg. Chronic infections can cause bacteria to travel upstream from the vagina to the fallopian tubes. When these tubes are damaged, experiencing problems such as inflammation, scarring, or fluid buildup, they can become blocked, severely impacting fertilization and pregnancy.

"When couples first get married, there's no risk of blocked fallopian tubes, so it's easy to conceive. Conversely, long-term infections lead to infertility," the doctor said, advising women to simply clean the outside of their genitals gently to ensure cleanliness and safety. Absolutely avoid inserting fingers too deeply into the vagina, as this allows bacteria to enter and cause infection.

Doctors recommend that married women should ideally have gynecological checkups and screenings every six months to ensure they do not have sexually transmitted infections or infections that can damage the fallopian tubes.
