Recently, the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases has been continuously receiving many malaria patients after returning from African countries. All cases have been confirmed to be infected with the Plasmodium falciparum parasite - the most dangerous malaria pathogen currently.
One of the patients is Mr. HVT (36 years old, from Thanh Hoa province ), who previously worked in Congo. During his time working abroad, he contracted malaria several times but only received treatment to control the symptoms. About two weeks after returning to Vietnam, he developed a high fever of nearly 40 degrees Celsius, chills, headache, nausea, and persistent fatigue, requiring hospitalization.
Another case is Mr. MTH (45 years old, from Tuyen Quang ), a worker in Angola. Although he had previously contracted malaria, he had not received complete treatment. After returning to Vietnam, he experienced a relapse with a high fever of 40.2 degrees Celsius accompanied by severe chills. Test results confirmed that the patient was positive for the Plasmodium falciparum parasite and was transferred to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases for specialized treatment.

Dr. Tran Duy Hung, Head of the Virology - Parasitology Department, said that both patients exhibited high fever, chills, headache, and general body aches, and had a history of living and working in African countries.
According to doctors, Plasmodium falciparum is the most common and dangerous strain of malaria parasite, capable of causing severe illness, multi-organ failure, and even death if not diagnosed and treated promptly.
After treatment with specific antimalarial drugs via injection and oral administration, the patients' conditions improved significantly, their fever subsided, and their laboratory test results gradually stabilized.
Experts advise that individuals experiencing acute fever after returning from malaria-endemic areas, particularly in Africa, should seek medical attention and testing as soon as possible. Those preparing to work, travel, or visit these areas should also proactively take measures to prevent mosquito bites and seek advice on the use of preventative medication if necessary.
