E-commerce and digital consumption have become an inevitable trend in international trade within the digital economy , becoming the preferred shopping channel for the majority of consumers today.

Developing e-commerce in conjunction with digital technology.

According to the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), in 2024, the retail e-commerce market in Vietnam reached over US$25 billion, an increase of more than 20% compared to the previous year and accounting for approximately 9% of the total retail sales of goods and consumer services nationwide. Notably, Vietnam has risen to the top 3 largest e-commerce markets in Southeast Asia, and e-commerce contributes about two-thirds of the value of the national digital economy.

At the E-commerce Conference - Diversifying Export Markets and Applying Digital Technology for Businesses, organized by the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy in early September 2025, Deputy Director Lai Viet Anh shared: The strong development of e-commerce cannot be separated from digital technology. Applications such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data analytics, and the Internet of Things (IoT) have been reshaping the production, management, and distribution activities of businesses. Digital technology helps optimize operations, reduce costs, accurately analyze market trends, build smarter strategies, and simultaneously improve product quality and reputation, meeting the increasingly high demands of the international market.

According to Phi Anh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Informatics Association: Technology is a lever to enhance the competitiveness of businesses in the digital age. Digital transformation is considered the "key to survival" for many businesses in today's era of integration and fierce competition. Accordingly, businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), need a comprehensive approach centered around three pillars: people, data - processes, and technology, while simultaneously improving their information technology capabilities.

According to experts, the application of digital technology in businesses needs to focus on three directions and objectives: understanding consumer needs, defining business goals, and prioritizing investment in and enhancement of information technology capabilities and digital transformation.

In this context, businesses need to focus on implementing technological solutions to support their operations; optimizing and aggregating data, improving data quality, reporting, and data dissemination; and integrating mobile applications focused on the supply chain and collaborative technologies to develop multi-channel e-commerce, getting closer to the tastes and shopping habits of consumers in the digital age.

In Dong Nai, the e-commerce market has been expanding in recent years. This is due to the diversity of models, participants, operational processes, and supply chains for goods and services, supported by internet infrastructure and modern technology applications.

The Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee's plan for e-commerce development in 2025 sets out three objectives. These include striving to maintain the province's trade ranking among the top 10 provinces and cities nationwide. The province will also support producers and businesses of OCOP (One Commune One Product) products in the province by providing training and enabling them to conduct livestream sales…

Mr. Nguyen Duong The Kiet, Manager of Kohnan Bien Hoa Supermarket (Tam Hiep Ward, Dong Nai Province), said: "In terms of technology, Kohnan is continuing to strengthen its presence on e-commerce platforms such as Shopee and TikTok Shop to anticipate modern retail and consumer trends, and develop digital consumption channels. This will help meet the increasingly changing needs and shopping preferences of consumers."

Multichannel consumption is becoming increasingly popular.

The current trend among many businesses and retailers in the commercial sector is to expand sales channels, bringing products to various business platforms and leveraging the power of online sales channels. This opens up many types of shopping, consumption, multi-channel sales and marketing activities, shortening the geographical distance between localities in the region.

Many experts believe that consumer shopping trends have changed in the current economic context, with multi-channel consumption becoming increasingly popular. This involves consumers shifting from "tightening spending" to purposeful consumption (prioritizing value, health, etc.). Furthermore, multi-channel consumption allows customers to prioritize personalized, convenient, and innovative experiences.

Ms. Ngoc Van (residing in Trang Dai ward, Dong Nai province) shared: “Recently, I often choose to shop through online shopping applications such as Shopee and TikTok Shop. With the development of technology and social media, customers have many options to compare, hunt for promotions, and choose brands with good prices to add to their shopping cart, combined with modern and convenient online payment methods.”

Ms. Lai Viet Anh further shared: The Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy will continue to accompany the business community in promoting the development of e-commerce as well as the journey of digital transformation and international integration. This includes focusing on building and connecting a digital ecosystem encompassing e-commerce, logistics, digital payments, and open data, supporting businesses in their operations and expansion. In the coming time, the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy will continue to lead and coordinate with central and local agencies and partners to organize in-depth training and consulting programs to help businesses improve management capacity, optimize costs, and expand export markets effectively.
