* If you could give a general assessment of Da Nang's poetry journey over the past 50 years, what is it that you appreciate the most?
- The most outstanding thing we can be proud of is that over the past 50 years of poetry, generations of poets in Da Nang have produced many excellent works of literary value, contributing to the face of modern national literature. Continuing the literary tradition of the "Five Phoenixes Soaring Together" land of Quang Nam - Da Nang, from the generation of scholarly poets such as the patriotic scholars Pham Phu Thu, Ha Dinh Nguyen Thuat, Phan Chau Trinh, Huynh Thuc Khang, Tran Quy Cap, Tran Cao Van..., poets before 1945 such as Khuong Huu Dung, Phan Khoi, Hang Phuong, Pham Hau... to poets during the resistance against the French such as Hoang Chau Ky, Vo Quang, Trinh Duong...
Over the past 50 years, Da Nang has seen the emergence of poets who have established their names and whose works have been recognized by readers, such as Luu Trung Duong, Dong Trinh, Thanh Que, Ngan Vinh, Bui Cong Minh, Tan Hoai Da Vu… The generation of poets before 1975 and many poets after 1975 are known to readers, such as Nguyen Nha Tien, Nguyen Dong Nhat, Bui Xuan, Tran Tuan, Nguyen Kim Huy, Nguyen Nho Khiem, Ho Si Binh, Mai Huu Phuoc, Dinh Thi Nhu Thuy, Phan Hoang Phuong… and many young authors who are striving to create and shape their own poetic styles…
The works of Da Nang poets contribute to a rich and diverse portrayal of the city's poetry over the past 50 years, encompassing a wide range of themes, content, and writing styles, as well as efforts to create artistic language. This is vivid evidence of the passion for literature, love of poetry, and the relentless efforts of Da Nang authors on their path of literary creation in general and poetry in particular.
* After half a century, what are your impressions and feelings about Da Nang today among poets nationwide?
- Da Nang has always been a land that inspires great enthusiasm among poets from all over the country. Through the poetry collection "Da Nang in Spring" (Da Nang Publishing House, 2025), compiled by Non Nuoc Magazine, which features poems by 58 authors from within and outside the city about Da Nang, it's evident that while each author has different themes and artistic expressions, when writing about Da Nang, they all dedicate deep affection to the city, a passionate love for the land and people of Da Nang, a genuine pride and fascination with the beauty of its landscapes and the soul of its people, both in history and in the present day.
Through their poems, the authors express sincere praise for Da Nang and their belief in a bright future. And through these works, readers can also perceive the beauty and depth of the human soul when they come to Da Nang, become attached to Da Nang, and perhaps above all, feel profound admiration and gratitude.
* In your opinion, what are the main trends in creative activity in 2025?
- 2025 is a year of many significant historical events for the country, the most prominent and important being the 50th anniversary of the country's peace and reunification, the reunion of North and South Vietnam. Throughout those 50 years, poetry has often been used to express emotions, ideals, thoughts, and the meaning of life in a special way.
Poetry, first and foremost, beautifies the human soul and life. Honoring poetry is honoring the subtle values of culture, multiplying the good values of life, contributing to building social trust and morality, and implementing and concretizing the Party's guidelines on culture and arts in response to the demands of the new era. In recent years, the city has paid special attention to building and developing literature and art, including the powerful inspiration of poetry, all for the sake of human dignity.
In recent workshops held in Da Nang, the city's creative community has consistently presented diverse perspectives and approaches to two key aspects of poetic creation: the character and identity of contemporary poets. In this context, character refers to self-confidence and self-mastery in all circumstances. With character combined with talent, poets can create their own unique identity, their own distinctiveness.
Poets also affirm that true character is essential for true identity; a poet without true identity is merely a poet, not a poet. This is especially true in the current era of artificial intelligence's influence on creative writing. No matter how advanced artificial intelligence may be, it can never replace the genuine emotional resonance of the human soul, the process of writing with the utmost emotion of a poet... That is precisely the character and identity of a writer.
I think the theme of 50 years of national reunification is a major and captivating topic for artists and writers, especially dedicated writers and poets, who hope to create works that keep pace with the nation and the times they live in. "The Song of National Reunification" will surely be a central theme for arts and culture organizations to launch large-scale and vibrant creative campaigns in 2025...
