Things Apple needs to improve on the iPhone.

Note that because Apple currently offers many different iPhone models, these suggestions only apply to certain iPhone lines.

The iPhone is good, but it still needs a lot of improvement.

Refresh rate on base template

When buying an Android phone, users can find many models with 90Hz or 120Hz screens (or even higher in some cases). This is true even when considering a budget phone like the Galaxy A54.

But on iOS, users only get a 120Hz refresh rate if they opt for the more expensive Pro model. Even the more expensive and recent iPhones like the iPhone 15 or 15 Plus only have a 60Hz refresh rate. This is such a basic and outdated specification in 2024 that it's unbelievable Apple is still using it. This partly explains why buyers are increasingly choosing the iPhone Pro. All recent indications point to the iPhone 16 once again being stuck at a 60Hz refresh rate.

Telephoto camera

Although the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a good 5x telephoto camera, it still falls short compared to some phones like the Galaxy S23 Ultra (10x) or the Sony Xperia 1 VI (7.1x). In fact, the Xperia 1 VI is extremely impressive because it can switch between multiple zoom levels with just one lens.

The telephoto camera capabilities on Apple products are still not the best.

However, with iPhones, users only get one telephoto zoom level, and the digital zoom capability isn't comparable to some other phones. Therefore, if you try to zoom beyond 5x, the quality degrades rapidly. This is less convincing when compared to top-of-the-line models from Samsung or even Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo…

Charging speed

The OnePlus 12 can charge up to 100W, the Xiaomi 14 Pro up to 120W, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra at 45W. But with the iPhone 15, the official figure is that it can't exceed 20W. As a result, although these phones also have smaller batteries than most comparable Android handsets, they charge more slowly, and the same is true for wireless charging – which the iPhone 15 series can only do at a maximum of 15W.

Apple doesn't seem interested in offering faster charging, but falling so far behind, perhaps the company needs to change.

Battery capacity

Another issue related to iPhone batteries is capacity, as Apple consistently puts smaller batteries in its phones compared to similarly sized Android phones. The largest iPhone battery is 4,441mAh on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but this is still significantly smaller than the standard 5,000mAh found on the best Android phones. Some Android phones even have larger batteries, reaching 6,000mAh or more in some cases.

Battery life remains a weakness of iPhones compared to their Android competitors.

Of course, users don't need a 6,000 mAh battery on an iPhone, but there's no reason why Apple shouldn't increase the capacity to around 5,000 mAh in the Pro Max and Plus models, and at least 4,000 mAh for the Pro and standard models (which are currently below 3,500 mAh).

It might make the phone a little heavier and thicker, but arguably it's a fair price to pay for a phone with a battery that lasts up to two days. Because iPhones are already known for their excellent battery life, increasing battery capacity will further enhance their competitiveness.

Number of lenses

While Samsung's flagship phones have long featured four rear lenses, Apple has stuck with three, or even just two, lenses on the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. These are arguably disappointing numbers. In the case of the two-lens setup, it lacks a telephoto lens – a crucial feature for expensive phones.

Switching to a triple-lens system, including wide-angle, ultra-wide, and telephoto lenses, will bring an enhanced level of photography to iPhone users.
