From the Tran Dynasty to the Nguyen Dynasty alone, Ha Tinh province produced 148 scholars who achieved the highest academic honors. Nguyen Van Giai, a high-ranking scholar, had 13 sons who all passed the imperial examinations; Su Hy Nhan and his son Su Duc Huy both achieved the title of "Trang Nguyen" (First-ranked scholar) during the Tran Dynasty. Villages such as Truong Luu (Can Loc), Dong Thai (Duc Tho), Tien Dien (Nghi Xuan), Ich Hau, and Thach Chau (Loc Ha) are all renowned for their scholarly achievements.
Furthermore, Ha Tinh also boasts families and clans with a tradition of scholarly pursuit and academic achievement. These include the Nguyen clan in Tien Dien (Nghi Xuan) with famous names such as Nguyen Quynh, Nguyen Nghiem, Nguyen Du, and Nguyen Khan; the Nguyen Huy clan in Truong Luu, renowned in history for its four-generation lineage: Nguyen Huy Tuu, Tham Hoa Nguyen Huy Oanh, Nguyen Huy Tu, and Nguyen Huy Ho; and the Phan Huy clan, famous for Phan Huy Ich, who earned a doctorate and whose son, the poet Phan Huy Chu, contributed many distinguished scholars and talented individuals to the nation.
According to data from the Ha Tinh Union of Science and Technology Associations, to date, nearly 800 professors and associate professors are from Ha Tinh. They are all leading scientists and top experts in their respective fields. In the last 13 years, approximately 250 people from Ha Tinh have been awarded the titles of professor and associate professor.
The tradition of learning in Hong Lam is being continued and developed. Many new faces have brought fame to Ha Tinh, the "land of learning," including: Trinh Kim Chi – Gold Medalist at the Asian- Pacific Mathematical Olympiad; Le Nam Truong – Silver Medalist at the International Mathematical Olympiad; Vo Anh Duc and Phan Nhat Duy – Gold Medalists at the International Mathematical Olympiad; Phan Xuan Hanh and Dinh Cao Son – Gold Medalists at the International Chemistry Olympiad; Tran Minh Hoang – Silver Medalist at the International Mathematical Olympiad…
In addition, many students have achieved national academic excellence awards, topped examinations, and gained admission to prestigious universities around the world, and numerous professors and doctors have made scientific discoveries that have been applied in practice.
Along with inherent strength, what motivates generations of people in Ha Tinh to strive tirelessly for education is the encouragement of their families and clans, and the support of society as a whole. The province has scholarship and talent promotion funds to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds to excel in their studies; the journey to school for students in remote areas has attracted thousands of participants. The honoring and encouragement of learning and scholarship has created a learning society.
According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Truong, Vice Chairman of the Ha Tinh Association for the Promotion of Learning, nearly 5,600 family clans in the province have established learning promotion committees. Fundraising has become a regular practice and a responsibility of each family and individual.
Every year, clans hold activities to honor and reward their descendants with good academic achievements. On average, tens of thousands of students throughout the province receive scholarships from these clans before the start of the new school year. Thanks to this, through the centuries, the tradition of valuing education in Hong Lam has continued to flow and grow ever stronger, never running dry.
