Lake Chuzenji

Lake Chuzenji is a scenic spot located within Nikko National Park (Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture).

Legend has it that this lake was formed after the eruption of Mount Nantai about 20,000 years ago and is the largest natural lake (with a circumference of about 25km and a surface area of 11.62km2), reaching a depth of 163m and located at an altitude of 1,269m above sea level. Nikko is a top destination in autumn, when the foliage changes color to vibrant yellow and red, creating a picturesque scene. In spring, visitors can enjoy the cherry blossoms in full bloom; or in summer, they can kayak around the lake while admiring the giant azaleas in bloom.

Scattered along the lake are European-style resorts built in the 19th and 20th centuries, along with religious structures such as Futara Shrine and Chuzenji Temple. In winter, tourists flock here to attend the Snow and Ice Festival and participate in sports such as skiing and ice skating.

Lake Shirakaba

Shirakaba is the name of an artificial lake located north of Chino City (Nagano Prefecture). It is famous for its beautiful natural scenery and hiking trails.

Additionally, there is an amusement park with many exciting rides. Lake Shirakaba is surrounded by many silver birch trees, hence its name, "silver birch lake." A striking feature of Lake Shirakaba is the small shrine with a red torii gate "rising" from the water.

Lake Kawaguchi (Yamanashi)

Lake Kawaguchi (Fujikawaguchiko town, Yamanashi prefecture) is the second largest lake in the Fuji Five Lakes area – five lakes surrounding the foot of Mount Fuji, a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized in 2013.

This is one of the most beautiful locations to photograph the "cherry blossom tunnel" or the momiji (Japanese maple leaf) forest surrounding the legendary Mount Fuji, as featured in Japanese promotional publications.

Around the lake are also many interesting museums such as the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum, famous for its kimono collection and traditional gardens; the Kawaguchiko Art Museum, which displays many works depicting Mount Fuji; the Kawaguchiko Music Forest, specializing in musical instruments and located in a European-style garden; or the Kawaguchiko Muse Museum, which displays the works of Yuki Atae, famous for making cotton dolls with lifelike expressions.
