Le Thi Tuyet overcame the heat and physical challenges to win the silver medal in the most demanding event of athletics.
But above all, the members of the Vietnamese Sports Delegation, especially the female athletes, have overcome all difficulties and hardships to fight with the highest determination and spirit, bringing glory to the country's sports.
Never give up on your goals.
Le Thi Tuyet, a girl only 1.46m tall and weighing less than 38kg, once astonished the domestic athletics world by winning the gold medal in the Marathon and breaking the record at the 2022 National Sports Games. And in her first SEA Games appearance, the girl from Phu Yen province excellently won the silver medal in the women's 42km Marathon. Competing against opponents with better physiques and strides from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand, plus the scorching sun in Cambodia, Le Thi Tuyet still competed with great effort. Although she led from kilometer 31, she ultimately could not beat the Indonesian athlete. This silver medal is very commendable, but people will admire Tuyet even more for the way she overcame difficulties to win it. Due to health issues, Tuyet could not give her all. Therefore, the 19-year-old runner was overtaken by the Indonesian athlete in the final kilometers.
Tuyết's teammate in this event was Nguyễn Thị Ninh. Although she didn't win a medal, she impressed the cheering spectators with her willpower. After pushing herself to the finish line, Ninh collapsed and needed medical assistance, including oxygen and ice packs to cool her body. "Even if I die, I have to reach the finish line," Nguyễn Thị Ninh said after regaining her strength. It's clear that Ninh did everything she could, sacrificing herself to avoid giving up. That is the spirit of Vietnam, the strength of national pride in sports.
In Jujitsu, Dang Thi Huyen endured the pain to defeat her Singaporean opponent, winning the bronze medal in the 52 kg weight category. Just minutes before, Huyen had suffered a hand injury and had to withdraw from her match against the Philippines. After winning the bronze medal, Huyen asked the medical team to apply ice and immobilize her arm due to the intense pain.
Fighting for the national flag.
Truong Thao Vy, one of the four girls who brought home the historic gold medal for 3x3 basketball, also endured the pain from an injury sustained in the semi-final to compete in the final and, along with her teammates, achieve a victory for Vietnamese basketball. Less than two hours after the exhausting semi-final against Indonesia, Thao Vy and her teammates entered the final against the Philippines, a team with many tall and strong players. Yet, the Vietnamese girls showed no signs of fatigue; they overcame the pressure with their resilience and effort, leading to a spectacular victory. “One or two players were injured in the semi-final. In the final, the team also faced many difficulties against the tall and strong players from the Philippines, but we overcame them. Every time the fans chanted ‘Vietnam champions!’ in the stands, we became even more determined, always reminding ourselves to fight for our country's colors,” Thao Vy shared.
Fighting for her country's colors was the goal of 14-year-old swimmer Nguyen Thuy Hien, the smallest athlete in the swimming team and the youngest member of the Vietnamese delegation at the 32nd SEA Games, as she won a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle. Thuy Hien revealed that she competed in eight events at this year's SEA Games. Although she felt a little apprehensive facing opponents who were much taller and more experienced, her efforts, determination, and above all, her love for her country helped her overcome the challenges and bring home a medal for Vietnamese swimming.
Going back in time to 2019 – the 30th SEA Games, athlete Pham Thi Hong Le, after winning the gold medal in the women's 42km marathon, had to be taken to an ambulance, breathing oxygen. She was in excruciating pain from full-body cramps, her body stiffening from exhaustion, bringing many to tears. Also at this SEA Games, center-back Chuong Thi Kieu of the Vietnamese women's football team, despite her left leg bleeding and being wrapped in two large white bandages, endured the pain and competed to help her teammates overcome Thailand and win the precious gold medal. At the 31st SEA Games, Nguyen Thi Oanh won 3 gold medals for Vietnamese athletics. To achieve that success, Oanh endured long years of hardship and challenges from her kidney disease. But with extraordinary willpower and a burning desire to contribute, "Oanh the Piglet" returned to the track, achieving countless victories for Vietnamese sports. And just recently, this petite girl continued to bring glory to Vietnamese athletics by winning the gold medal in the 5,000m event at the 32nd SEA Games.
It can be said that these girls are all role models of extraordinary willpower in sports, representing the mental strength of Vietnamese women, and have been, are, and will continue to inspire and spread positive messages to everyone.
