New hope from the "flood epicenter"

As the floodwaters recede, people in the flood-stricken areas are gradually repairing their homes and restoring production with the support of the government and relevant forces to rebuild their lives.

Even days after the raging floodwaters receded, Hoa Thinh commune still bore the scars of the historic flood: houses partially damaged or completely collapsed, and roof tiles scattered everywhere.

In the makeshift military tent next to their house, which had been completely destroyed by the flood, Ms. Le Thi Hien and her husband still tried to maintain an optimistic smile. Ms. Hien shared: “The most important thing is that the whole family is safe. The government, the army, and the police have helped us find shelter, have rice to eat, and have clean water...”

Residents of Dong Hoa ward received rice from relief teams.

A few hundred meters away, Mr. Tran Cong Trinh's family was also busy clearing up a part of their house that had been buried under mud. During the recent flood, Mr. Trinh sheltered nine families from the neighborhood on his tiled roof. Now, despite the severe damage to his house, he remains calm: "Compared to others, I am still lucky. Now I just hope everyone can get their lives back on track soon."

Throughout the inter-village roads, the atmosphere of disaster relief is one of utmost urgency. Excavators, trucks, and shovels are working continuously. Livestock and poultry carcasses have been collected and safely buried; thick piles of mud and soil have been leveled, restoring the road surface. Schools and village cultural centers are also being quickly cleaned up by authorities and residents to resume operations.

According to Mr. Phuong Van Lanh, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Council of Hoa Thinh commune, the local government has mobilized maximum resources and received active support from the central government, the province, and charitable organizations. "We always stand by the people, providing everything from food and temporary shelter to daily necessities and manpower for environmental remediation… all delivered to the people as quickly as possible," Mr. Lanh said.

Areas that were once submerged in water, such as Tuy An Bac, Tuy An Tay, Tuy An Dong, Hoa Xuan, and the wards of Dong Hoa and Tuy Hoa, are now entering a phase of urgent reconstruction.

The most obvious commonality is the spirit of sharing and mutual support among the people. When a house collapses, the whole neighborhood comes together to rebuild it. When fields are buried in mud, everyone pitches in to clear the soil. Those who suffered less damage joined hands with the government and the military and police forces to clean up. Many individuals also assisted charitable groups, directly transporting and distributing gifts to needy households.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai My, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairwoman of the People's Council of Tuy An Tay commune, shared: “The damage caused by the floods was immense, but thanks to the solidarity and efforts of the entire political system, no one was left behind. The priority is ensuring the safety of the people, especially those households that had to be evacuated due to the risk of landslides. The commune mobilized forces to support emergency relocation and provided sufficient food and temporary accommodation. Currently, we are coordinating with higher authorities to quickly arrange a stable resettlement area and support people in restoring their livelihoods.”
