Developing a sustainable healthcare system.

As a city with a strategically important location on Vietnam's socio -economic map, Da Nang not only focuses on developing transportation infrastructure and industry but also pays special attention to the healthcare sector to improve the quality of life for its people.

Over the past period, the city has actively invested in and upgraded its healthcare infrastructure. This is one of the important steps to improve the quality of healthcare for its residents and meet the growing demand for medical services in the area.

At the end of 2024, Da Nang officially put into operation two large medical centers with a total investment of nearly 1,000 billion VND. Among them, the Neurosurgery, Trauma, and Plastic Surgery Center has 11 above-ground floors, 2 basement floors, and 407 beds, playing a crucial role in treating complex neurological and orthopedic trauma conditions.

At the same time, the Organ Transplantation and Stem Cell Transplantation Center of Da Nang Hospital also commenced operations. With 422 beds and advanced equipment, it is one of the first medical centers in the region specializing in organ transplantation and stem cell therapy.

The opening of these two medical centers at Da Nang Hospital demonstrates the city's commitment to the healthcare sector and provides residents of the city and the Central and Central Highlands provinces with access to advanced, high-tech medical services without having to travel far to other parts of the country for treatment.

Simultaneously, Da Nang is also implementing projects to build specialized hospitals to meet the needs of treating specific diseases. A prime example is the Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, which has been upgraded with an investment of nearly 789 billion VND. The project aims not only to improve facilities but also to enhance professional capacity, helping the hospital become a leading medical unit in the field of maternal and child health care.

In addition, the city is also implementing a project to upgrade the Da Nang Psychiatric Hospital, with a budget of over 87 billion VND, aiming to improve treatment and care conditions for patients.

Alongside the development of tertiary hospitals, Da Nang also focuses on building and upgrading the system of health stations in wards and communes, as well as emergency services and patient transportation.

As of 2024, the city has 1,076 licensed medical facilities, including 96 public facilities, 1 clinic, 56 commune/ward health stations, 7 emergency and patient transport services, and 980 private medical facilities.

The expansion and upgrading of the healthcare system has contributed to increasing the number of hospital beds, addressing overcrowding, and improving service quality. The current bed ratio is 74 beds per 10,000 people, double the national average.

Notably, from having 61.4 hospital beds in 2014, Da Nang has increased to over 74 beds by the end of 2024, surpassing the national average (34 hospital beds per 10,000 people). This indicator shows significant investment in healthcare infrastructure, improving the capacity to receive and treat patients.

Towards a modern healthcare system on par with the region.

Besides infrastructure investment, the city's healthcare sector has also made a strong mark in applying modern medical techniques at hospitals. The city's healthcare system receives more than 4 million patients for examination and treatment each year, of which more than 35% are from other provinces.

Among these, many advanced techniques have been successfully implemented, such as: in-vitro fertilization, essential early newborn care with skin-to-skin contact (Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital); lobectomy, embryo resection, mediastinal tumor resection, pancreaticoduodenectomy, liver resection (Da Nang Oncology Hospital); testing therapy and psychological therapy in the treatment of children (Mental Health Hospital); stem cell transplantation for spinal cord injury; kidney transplantation; solitaire technique (thrombectomy) in the treatment of acute cerebral infarction; application of ECMO technique, hemodialysis and ultrafiltration technique (Da Nang Hospital)...

Currently, the city's health sector is promoting the application of technology and digital transformation to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment, bringing satisfaction, efficiency, and convenience to the people, thereby contributing to the implementation of the "Development of Smart Healthcare in Da Nang City" project.

One of the key steps in the digital transformation of the city's healthcare sector is the application of electronic medical records systems in hospitals, health centers, and medical facilities. This system helps store, manage, and share information about patients' health status quickly and accurately. Patients no longer need to bring paper documents when seeking medical treatment, saving time and minimizing the risk of information loss.

In addition to implementing electronic medical records, Da Nang has also deployed telemedicine services, allowing patients to consult and receive medical treatment via the internet. Particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, these services have helped reduce the burden on hospitals.

Following the direction of Resolution 43-NQ/TW, in the future, Da Nang will continue to develop its healthcare sector in a modern and smart direction, applying advanced technologies to improve service quality and integrating technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT) in disease diagnosis, monitoring people's health, and hospital management.

At the same time, the city will focus on training human resources, developing a network of high-quality medical services, and continuing to invest in building new and upgrading hospitals, especially satellite hospitals, in order to reduce the burden on tertiary hospitals, thereby improving the quality of medical examination and treatment and serving the increasingly high demands of the people.

With well-planned steps and strategies, Da Nang is poised to become a major medical center in the Central and Central Highlands regions, as well as aiming to build a healthy community where all citizens receive comprehensive and quality healthcare.
