What content in math is a 'nightmare' for 10th grade candidates in Ho Chi Minh City?

On the morning of June 7, more than 76,000 candidates in Ho Chi Minh City continued to take the 10th grade math exam, which was also the last subject for those who did not take the exam to enter specialized schools. Among them, 3 questions about practical math were a concern for many candidates.

At the Hong Bang Secondary School (District 5) exam site, Nguyen Thai Duc Huy, a student at Hong Bang Secondary School, said that his 10th grade exam yesterday went quite smoothly with the literature exam being a bit tricky while the English exam was easy. "With math, every year the Ho Chi Minh City exam is difficult, so I think this year will be the same. When solving the exam, I will focus on geometry because it is easier to get points, especially questions a and b," the male student shared.

Meanwhile, practical math was the part of the exam that Huy was most worried about, because "I just solved the problems but didn't know how to practice practical math properly." In addition to class and extra classes, Huy said he also listened to some "TikTok teachers" solve math problems in other provinces and cities. Setting his wish to enter Tran Khai Nguyen High School (District 5), Huy said he needed to get 6-7 points for today's exam.

Sharing the same opinion, Pham Hiep Duy Khang, a student at the same school, worried: "In the math test, the practical questions are my 'nightmare', because if question c in geometry is in the form of calculation, I can still improvise. I hope the test only 'hits' a few difficult questions to 'block the score'." Sharing more about his test-taking strategy, Khang said he would focus on solving the easy questions first and then move on to the advanced questions.

Similar to Huy, Khang said he also watches TikTok to review some key formulas, but not very often. He mainly focuses on solving problems to improve his reflexes. In the final minutes, Khang said he solved about 10 math problems and hopes to be admitted to his first choice, Saigon Practical High School (District 5, Saigon University).

As for Tran Nguyen Khang, a student at Vinschool Central Park (Binh Thanh District), the practical math part scared him because the exam questions could come in many different forms, requiring candidates to understand the questions in order to accurately set up equations in terms of x and y. "I'm good at literature and English, so I hope my score can help me 'carry' math," the student majoring in literature shared.

To prepare well for the exam related to practical math, Tran Thi Nguyet Minh, a student at Nguyen Binh Khiem Secondary School (Nha Be District), said she even contacted her friends who majored in math to ask for advice and guidance when doing the test, in addition to solving many questions of this type. "The literature test was very good, the English test was within my ability, but I was afraid the math test would be difficult. This was my 'nightmare'," the female student confided.

Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, informed that the 10th grade math exam will be presented through the following knowledge streams: Geometry and Measurement; Numbers and Algebra; Statistics and Probability. The purpose of the exam is to assess mathematical abilities such as mathematical thinking and reasoning, mathematical problem solving, and mathematical modeling. Of which, there are 3 questions on practical math, accounting for 3.5 points; and the problem on plane geometry accounts for 3 points.

This afternoon (June 7), candidates will continue to take specialized exams if they register for specialized schools. According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, 76,435 candidates registered for the 2025 exam and the total enrollment target is 70,070 places, meaning about 91.7% of candidates will be admitted to public schools. On the other hand, the total target for private schools is nearly 19,500 places, helping to reduce competitive pressure compared to previous years.
