Mr. Thu and his wife, Mrs. Pham Thi Dung, got married in 1992. He was born and raised in a fishing family with many siblings, while she was a farmer. Difficult circumstances made it easy for them to sympathize, understand and get married. Amidst the challenges of life, the couple did not expect much, just hoping for a happy family. Every day, Mr. Thu worked as a rickshaw driver. Although the work was very hard, he did not mind. The only thing that made Mr. Thu and his wife worried was that they had not had a child.
The older he got, the greater the desire to have a successor in Mr. Thu's heart. Knowing that Mrs. Dung was sad every time she thought about the future, he tried his best to encourage her, promising to take good care of her until her hair turned white and her teeth fell out. However, what Mr. Thu did not expect was that his health would decline rapidly after years of hard work. Many diseases related to the lungs, heart, colon... made him weak. There were times when he had to rely entirely on his wife's care.
In early 2024, Mr. Thu's wife fainted and fell to the floor. Although she was treated promptly, she has not been as healthy as before. She is not as clear-headed as before, sometimes forgetting, sometimes remembering. Her right leg and arm are also paralyzed. Being old and weak, not having enough strength to take good care of his wife, Mr. Thu had to rely on the support of his wife's sisters. That always made him feel guilty.
Seven months ago, Mr. Thu had to return to the hospital due to a heart condition. After examination, the doctors discovered another worrying thing: a tumor appeared in his rectum. Since then, Mr. Thu has had to undergo long-term radiation therapy. His and his wife's illness has caused the money they had saved for their funeral to gradually run out. Thanks to the support of relatives and acquaintances, Mr. Thu has been able to eat three meals a day and buy medicine to fight the disease.
The day we visited, Mr. Thu was writing an application to the “Bright Tomorrow” Cancer Patient Support Fund. Trying to control his disabled arm, he struggled to write each letter. Mr. Thu said that now, he only hopes to live so that he can meet and encourage his wife. At the end of the road, Mr. Thu still did not forget the promise he made years ago.
