Agricultural professionals visit the fields with local farmers.

Early in the morning, Mr. Dao Dinh Tru went to his fields to check for pests and diseases affecting his rice plants. A few small areas in his fields showed signs of brown spot and blast disease. According to Mr. Tru's experience, these signs require timely spraying of pesticides to prevent widespread outbreaks. Mr. Dao Dinh Tru, from Tan Bao village, Ban Qua commune, Bat Xat district, shared: "Every year we get blast disease, but this year there are very few planthoppers and leaf-rolling caterpillars, unlike previous years when there were a lot."

Rice blast and brown spot are two highly damaging diseases that persist throughout the rice plant's growth, often causing leaf burn during the tillering and heading stages, and damaging the panicle neck during the flowering stage, significantly impacting yield. Therefore, upon detecting signs of the disease, farmers promptly spray pesticides. Ms. Lo Thi Vai, from Tan Bao village, Ban Qua commune, Bat Xat district, shared: "During this period, rice grows very quickly, and if not closely monitored, it is very easy to get pests and diseases. When we detect disease, we report it to the agricultural extension officers so they can come to the field to inspect and advise on spraying pesticides."

Farmers need to intensify their monitoring of the fields, promptly detect pests and diseases, and proactively implement control measures.

This spring, Bat Xat district planted over 1,000 hectares of rice. While in other localities, people mainly sow seedlings according to the main planting season, in Bat Xat, due to the specific farming characteristics, farmers usually divide the planting into three stages: early and main rice in lowland areas, and late rice in some highland areas. This year, the erratic weather, with alternating sunshine and rain, has created favorable conditions for pests and diseases to develop and cause damage, especially in the early spring rice crop. The relevant departments are actively involved, working closely with farmers to monitor pest and disease outbreaks and take timely action. Mr. Mai Huu Duc, from the Bat Xat District Agricultural Services Center, said: "For farmers, firstly, they must increase field inspections. Secondly, they should inspect their fields once a day, and when pests are detected, they need to inform the relevant agencies so that timely measures can be taken."

According to recommendations from agricultural experts, late April and early May are the peak months for pest and disease outbreaks. Therefore, farmers should intensify their monitoring of their fields now, promptly detecting pests and diseases to proactively implement control measures and ensure the yield and production of the spring rice crop.
