In the summer-autumn crop of 2025, Ms. Phan Thi Hai Ly's family (Trung Thanh village, Duc Thinh commune) planted 2.5 hectares of rice fields with key varieties such as BQ and Lai Thom 6. At this time, most of the area has entered the heading stage. In response to the warning that the third generation of pests and diseases is at risk of causing damage with high density and severe damage, Ms. Ly has increased the time spent in the fields and proactively implemented prevention solutions.
“Since the end of June, we have sprayed to prevent pests such as leaf rollers, brown planthoppers and brown spot disease twice. However, after monitoring, we still saw the appearance of fungus and brown spots, so I decided to spray again for a third time. Currently, the rice is in the stage of heading, if we do not spray to prevent pests in time, there is a high risk of affecting productivity and causing crop failure,” Ms. Ly shared.

In the summer-autumn crop of 2025, Duc Thinh commune planted a total area of 2,314 hectares. Faced with the unprecedentedly complicated situation of pests and diseases in the whole province in general and in the locality in particular, the unit has coordinated with specialized departments, Party committees at all levels, and village Party cells to deploy many solutions to guide people to take timely preventive measures.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen Luong - an officer of the Economic Department of Duc Thinh Commune People's Committee shared: "Since mid-July, when the second generation of leaf rollers broke out and caused damage, Duc Thinh Commune has organized meetings to disseminate information related to the development of pests and diseases to the people; coordinated with Syngenta Vietnam Co., Ltd. to organize field training on leaf rollers. In the first 2 weeks of August, it was determined that the third generation of pests and diseases would continue to develop and cause damage, notably coinciding with the time when rice was heading, the locality organized training and propaganda in 42 hamlets and villages. Up to now, most of the summer-autumn rice area in the commune has been sprayed to prevent and control the third generation of pests and diseases, ensuring the set progress."

In Cam Binh commune - one of the localities with many summer-autumn rice fields infected with leaf rollers and brown planthoppers in the first and second generations, people have been more proactive in preventing and controlling pests in the third generation. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hau (Tam Dong village, Cam Binh commune) said: "The area and level of infection with pests such as brown planthoppers, leaf rust, leaf rollers, etc. this year are much higher than last year. We have sprayed many times to prevent and control pests but encountered showers and rains, so the effectiveness was reduced. Up to now, 4 hectares of my family's rice fields have been sprayed for the 4th time, hopefully the pest situation will be well controlled."
The stage of rice panicle formation and flowering is often considered the "golden time" that determines the yield and quality of rice grains. Therefore, in addition to pest control solutions, people also focus on fertilization to increase the plant's ability to absorb nutrients, create firm roots, increase grain weight, and reduce the rate of empty grains.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Thinh (Group 6 - Dau Lieu, Nam Hong Linh Ward) shared: “After spraying against brown planthoppers and leaf rollers for the third time, I applied potassium fertilizer to help the rice grow and develop well. If every year I only applied 1-2 times during the panicle initiation and panicle initiation stages, this year I applied 5 times. Never before has the summer-autumn rice crop had such complicated developments as this year, however, under the guidance of experts, we all focused on and paid attention to following the right roadmap.”

According to the Department of Crop Production and Livestock, in the 2025 summer-autumn crop, the whole province planted more than 45,170 hectares of rice. Determining the complicated situation of pests and diseases in the summer-autumn rice crop, from August 8 to August 20 is considered the peak period to mobilize people in 69 communes/wards to implement urgent measures, ensuring effective control and prevention of pests and diseases, minimizing damage caused by pests and diseases.

Ms. Ho Thi Thuy, Head of Plant Protection Department ( Ha Tinh Department of Crop Production and Livestock) said: By August 16, thanks to the drastic participation of all levels and sectors, and the initiative of the people, the area of summer-autumn rice infected with pests and diseases has tended to decrease. Specifically, the area of leaf rollers is 3,200 hectares, brown planthoppers are 213 hectares, and brown rice sheath blight is 3,200 hectares. All of these pests have been sprayed for prevention and control. The specialized sector is still assigning technical staff to closely follow the fields, directly instruct and handle on-site arising situations and developments, in order to ensure safety in summer-autumn rice production in 2025.
