Durian farmers in the mountainous district of Khánh Sơn ( Khánh Hòa province ) are overjoyed as durian prices have reached a new peak for the first time.
Currently, the price of grade 1 durian purchased directly from the farm is nearly 100,000 VND/kg, while other grades range from 75,000 to 85,000 VND/kg; whereas at the end of July 2023, the price of durian only ranged from 25,000 to 35,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Nguyen Binh (residing in To Hap town, Khanh Son district) said that early August each year is the peak season for durian harvesting.
"Every year, the price only fluctuates between 45,000 and 65,000 VND/kg. This year, even though it's only the peak season, the price of durian has already risen sharply, with traders coming directly to the orchards to place orders. If sold in bulk (selling the entire orchard), the price is already 85,000 VND/kg," Mr. Binh said.
Farmers in Khanh Hoa are thrilled as durian prices reach a new peak for the first time. |
Meanwhile, Ms. Nguyen Nhung has 2 hectares of durian trees, which will yield about 30 tons of fruit this year. With the current selling price at the farm, Ms. Nhung will earn hundreds of millions of dong in profit.
Khanh Son district has the largest durian growing area in Khanh Hoa province, with approximately 2,500 hectares, of which 1,200 hectares are currently bearing fruit; mainly distributed in communes such as Son Lam, Thanh Son, Son Binh, Ba Cum Bac, and Ba Cum Nam.
Since it's peak season, hundreds of tons of durian are being exported to China through official channels every day. |
Mr. Tran Thanh Tung, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Khanh Son district, said he was also surprised by the "peak" in durian prices. Khanh Son district has two durian varieties that occupy the largest area: Ri6 and Monthong. In previous years, the price of Ri6 only fluctuated from 35,000 to 42,000 VND/kg, while Monthong reached a high of 50,000 to 53,000 VND/kg. The high purchase price, coupled with traders buying directly from the orchards, has resulted in large profits for farmers.
Khanh Son district has added two more units that have been granted durian growing area codes for official export to China: Dien Thanh Cooperative (Son Hiep commune) and Bay Ho Khanh Son Durian Cooperative (Son Lam commune); bringing the total number of organizations and individuals granted growing area codes to six, with a total area of nearly 180 hectares. Currently, dozens of other applications in this locality have also been submitted requesting growing area codes for official export.
Monthong durian is a specialty of the mountainous district of Khánh Sơn in particular and Khánh Hòa province in general. |
According to the leaders of Khanh Son District People's Committee, the high price of durian is partly due to the fact that the district has been granted a planting area code for official export to China, thus eliminating many intermediaries and price manipulation.
To preserve the Khánh Sơn durian brand and ensure compliance with standards for official export to China, the Khánh Sơn District People's Committee is simultaneously promoting awareness and requiring organizations and units granted planting area codes to strictly adhere to regulations, especially regarding documentation and procedures, compliance with regular and unscheduled monitoring, and ensuring that harmful microorganisms are controlled at low levels and pesticides are used in accordance with the regulations of the importing country.
