Observations at the rice fields in Van Tu commune, Yen Thanh district, show a bustling harvest atmosphere. Farmers are busily harvesting their rice. Mr. Tran Van Tuan, a local farmer, said: “My family harvested 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares) of Khang Dan rice variety, but this year the yield is only about 2.5 quintals per sao, a decrease of nearly 1 quintal compared to last year. Many other fields that haven't been harvested yet also show signs of empty grains.”

According to representatives of the Van Tu Commune People's Committee, this spring the entire commune planted over 800 hectares of rice, mainly varieties such as Khang Dan and BTR 225. The average yield is expected to be only about 2.5 quintals per sao (approximately 250 kg per 1000 square meters). The reason is believed to be the erratic weather, especially during the rice flowering stage when there was a prolonged period of overcast weather. In addition, some households are still using seeds of unknown origin, which are readily available on the market, affecting crop quality.

A similar situation occurred in Nam Thanh commune. Mr. Nguyen Huu Toan's family in Vinh Thanh hamlet said that this year they planted 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares) of rice but only harvested about 2.5 quintals per sao, while the previous season yielded 3.8 quintals per sao.
Conversely, many households in Nam Thanh commune still enjoyed a good harvest thanks to using high-quality rice varieties supplied by the Nam Thanh Agricultural Service Cooperative. Mr. Phan Cong Tang from Phan Dang Luu hamlet said: “My family planted 4 sao (approximately 0.4 hectares) of R225 rice variety from the cooperative, using machinery from planting and fertilizing to spraying pesticides by drone, so the yield reached 3.6 quintals per sao.”

Mr. Hoang Van Sam, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Thanh commune, said: This spring, the commune planted about 260 hectares of rice, and 20% of the area has already been harvested. The estimated yield is about 6.5 tons/ha, lower than the previous season. The main reasons for the decrease in yield are spontaneous sowing and cold weather during the rice flowering period, which resulted in low yields in many areas. However, about 100 hectares of rice using seeds from the cooperative still yielded stable productivity.
Mr. Nguyen Tho Trang – Director of Nam Thanh Agricultural Service Cooperative shared: “This season, the cooperative supplied R225 rice seeds (ThaiBinh Seed), combined with promoting mechanization in cultivation, applying fertilizer correctly, and using drones to spray pesticides, so the rice yielded over 7.1 tons/ha.”

Mr. Le Van Hong, Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Yen Thanh District, said: “The entire district planted over 12,790 hectares of spring rice, mainly the Khang Dan variety. The average yield is estimated at about 7 tons/ha. However, about 150 hectares suffered from grain discoloration and shriveling. The main reasons are unfavorable weather conditions during the flowering period, the use of unregulated seeds, and some localities not adhering to the district's planting schedule. The district is directing localities to take advantage of favorable weather to urgently harvest ripe rice areas to minimize damage from extreme weather such as thunderstorms and strong winds.”

In Quy Hop district, many localities are currently entering the rice harvest season. Ms. Vi Thi Minh, residing in Chau Ly commune, said that because the rice fields are located in a narrow area, harvesting machines cannot access them, so her family has to harvest by hand. This spring, her family planted 4 sao (approximately 0.4 hectares) of rice, mainly the Long Huong 8118 variety, achieving a yield of over 3 quintals per sao.
According to Mr. Nguyen Duy Hung, Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Quy Hop District, the entire district has more than 2,500 hectares of spring rice. This year, the rice crop is bountiful with an estimated yield of 6.2 tons/ha. The rice varieties mainly consist of 70% hybrid varieties and 30% purebred varieties. Currently, communes such as Chau Ly, Chau Thai, Chau Quang, and Chau Dinh have harvested over 300 hectares. To ensure a proactive harvest, the district has directed the mobilization of more than 40 combine harvesters to serve the people.
In Dien Chau district, some rice fields are also being harvested early.

In Nghe An province, this year's spring rice crop covers over 91,000 hectares. To date, localities have harvested more than 20% of the area. The Nghe An Department of Agriculture and Environment is directing localities to organize harvesting and land preparation simultaneously, ensuring readiness for the next production season and adherence to the planting schedule.
