Four years ago, Ms. Le Thi Dan in Trung Thinh hamlet boldly borrowed over 500 million VND to plant 6 sao (approximately 0.6 hectares) of Danh mountain ginseng. At the time, many people were skeptical about the effectiveness of this new crop. However, after only one year of care, the plants began to bloom. Now, the ginseng garden is in its fourth year and has yielded a bountiful harvest.
"The price of dried flowers is stable at 600,000 VND/kg. With a yield of about 40kg of dried flowers per sao (approximately 1000 square meters), the economic efficiency is many times greater than growing sugarcane before," Ms. Dan shared.

The ginseng flowering season lasts from the end of August to mid-October. Plants that are 5-7 years old can still yield tubers, which sell for up to 1.5 million VND/kg. "If well cared for, the plant will produce both flowers and tubers, providing a very stable income," she added.
Like Mrs. Dan, Mr. Le Viet Hien's family is busy harvesting ginseng flowers. To improve product quality, he invested 30 million VND in a home drying machine, meeting OCOP standards, and as a result, his product is being purchased by a company.
"Previously, we grew custard apples and sugarcane, but the market was unstable. Now, we've switched to ginseng, and we're getting both a good harvest and good prices. This crop has truly helped us change our lives," Mr. Hien shared.

While in the past, people struggled with traditional crops, now, thanks to Danh mountain ginseng, many households have earned tens of millions of dong per year.
According to Mr. Pham Van Thong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Nghia Hung commune, in recent years, Danh mountain ginseng has become a valuable raw material. "We will organize visits and learning opportunities for the local people to gradually expand this practice to other hamlets," Mr. Thong said.
Beyond just producing raw materials, the commune also collaborates with households to process and enhance the value of the products. Dành Mountain ginseng bud tea has achieved OCOP 3-star certification, opening up opportunities to access a wider market. Product promotion is also being intensified through trade fairs, e-commerce, and business networking.

The development of ginseng cultivation demonstrates a clear shift in the production mindset of the local people. No longer practicing small-scale, fragmented farming, farmers have boldly applied drying and preservation technologies, and linked production along the value chain. Many households believe that in just a few years, Nghia Hung commune will become a specialized ginseng farming area associated with the OCOP Nghe An brand.
The initial success of the Dành mountain ginseng opens up many prospects. The plant is well-suited to the natural conditions and meets market demand for clean, high-quality products. Besides its economic value, mountain ginseng also contributes to crop diversification, reducing dependence on sugarcane and custard apple – traditional crops with high risks.
