Orlando Pride's willingness to spend a large sum of money on Lizbeth Ovalle reflects a new trend in women's soccer. |
The world of women's soccer witnessed a historic milestone as Lizbeth Ovalle signed a contract with the American club Orlando Pride. According to The Guardian , Ovalle broke the all-time transfer record in women's soccer, being sold by Mexico's Tigres club to Orlando Pride for a fee of $1.5 million (approximately £1.1 million).
The previous record for women's soccer transfers was set by Arsenal when they bought Olivia Smith from Liverpool for $1.2 million in 2024. This deal also marks the second time in two consecutive years that Orlando Pride has completed one of the most expensive transfers in women's soccer history.
In 2024, representatives of American soccer also signed Barbra Banda from Shanghai Shengli for $740,000 . With these two signings, Orlando Pride became the only women's club in the world to possess two of the six most expensive transfer deals of all time.
Lizbeth Ovalle, nicknamed "La Maga" (The Magician), is considered the best Mexican female footballer currently. In March, she also caused a sensation with a memorable goal in Tigres' 2-0 victory in the Mexican league.
From a cross by her teammate, the Mexican female player executed a flying scorpion-style backheel shot from a very difficult position, sending the ball straight into the net. Remarkably, the ball's trajectory after the pass from her teammate was not easy, but Ovalle, with her back to the opponent's goal, still managed to score with a backheel volley.
The Guardian even called it potentially the most beautiful goal in the history of women's football, and a strong contender against other spectacular goals ever scored in world football (including men's). BeIN Sport didn't hesitate to call it almost certainly the most beautiful goal of 2025, and the top candidate for FIFA's Puskas Award this year.
