Following the final, Miss Universe 1991 Lupita Jones continued to be the target of criticism after her statements about her role as a judge at the MGI All Stars final in Thailand on May 30th.
In the final night, the judges scored the contestants directly through each round. In the last two Q&A rounds, Huong Giang received a score of 5 from Lupita Jones, even though her answers were considered intelligent. With two scores of 5 from Lupita, Huong Giang finished as the second runner-up.

Following the final night, many Vietnamese and international beauty pageant fans flooded Lupita Jones' personal page to express their outrage. Before the controversy could subside, Lupita continued to make controversial statements about the representative from the Philippines, Gazini Ganados.
Lupita frankly stated that she didn't see Gazini as having the potential to make it into the top 10. "It's not because she's terrible, but because her pre-semifinal interview didn't convince me at all. From her appearance and makeup to her presentation of the topic, everything was rather bland and lacked impact. Honestly, Gazini in her individual interview was one of the contestants who disappointed me the most," Lupita said.
She further shared that while Gazini has moments of charm on stage, her overall physique isn't quite balanced, especially her legs, which are too thin.
"There are many small details that make it hard for me to believe she deserves a spot in the top 10. To me, her image on stage and off stage are too different, and that's one of the reasons I'm not convinced by her," she said.
Lupita's comments caused a stir on beauty forums and angered Filipino audiences. Many believed that Lupita was making derogatory remarks about Gazini Ganados's appearance.
Gazini was one of the Filipino representatives who received a lot of support at this year's competition. Before the final, she was considered a strong contender for the crown. Ultimately, she finished in the top 5.
Amidst the backlash, Lupita Jones also shared her scoring method. "When scoring, I focused on giving 9s or 10s to candidates I felt deserved to move on. I wasn't overly concerned about whether those scores would change the outcome or create a tie. My goal was to select the top 15 based on my personal assessment. So that night I scored with that in mind," Lupita Jones explained.
Lupita Jones revealed that during the closed-door interview with the judging panel, she took extensive notes on the candidates, including aspects that weren't particularly impressive. However, this part of the competition wasn't scored.
She stated that when contestants reach the top 18, top 10, or top 5, their scores from previous rounds are erased, and the evaluation process restarts from the beginning. According to her, scoring is not based on a single round but on the candidate's entire journey in the competition.

"I always keep track of each candidate's entire process throughout the competition. From that, I assign my score," Lupita Jones emphasized.
She also asserted that she received no specific instructions regarding the selection of the winner. "Nobody told me who the winner was. Nobody gave any specific criteria or parameters for evaluation. I once asked Mr. Nawat if there was a specific ideal or characteristic he looked for in the winner. He replied no, only saying something along the lines of choosing the best, the most charismatic person," Lupita Jones said.
Lupita Jones also jokingly mentioned that recently many Vietnamese people have started following her social media accounts, saying, "They're probably just here to insult me, oh well."
Despite her explanations, many beauty pageant fans from Vietnam and the Philippines still flooded Lupita's personal page to criticize her.
Lupita Jones was Miss Universe 1991, becoming the first Mexican woman to win the Miss Universe title. She is currently a producer, actress, writer, speaker, and CEO of Mexicana Universal. She is known for her strong, outspoken personality.
