In one part of Ha Giang, people grow green squash and chayote in such a way that the number of fruits they harvest is too many to count.

With many creative approaches and innovative thinking in production linkages, many households in Viet Lam town have decided to be pioneers in the sustainable development of vegetable cultivation on trellises, and this has initially yielded positive results. This approach has opened up a new direction for economic development for the local people.

Zucchini, chayote, and loofah are easy-to-grow, high-yielding crops that can be stored for a long time... they have high economic value and are easy to sell.

This is a short-term, high-value climbing plant, taking only 90 days from planting to harvest and yielding 5 to 6 harvests per year, with selling prices ranging from 5,000 to 17,000 VND/kg depending on the time of year.

Currently, people are harvesting chayote. After harvesting the chayote, they regularly plant loofah and green squash, changing the crops according to the season.

To ensure that climbing plants thrive, instead of building traditional bamboo trellises, people have poured concrete posts and tied nylon ropes to create the trellises.

Farmers in Viet Lam town (Vi Xuyen district, Ha Giang province) are harvesting chayote at a model farm where chayote is grown on trellises.

Previously, bamboo trellises saved on initial investment costs but were not durable, lasting only about 1-2 years before breaking down. Concrete posts combined with nylon ropes, on the other hand, can last for about 10 years.

Mr. Lu Van Thanh - Group 11, Viet Lam town, Vi Xuyen district (Vi Xuyen district, Ha Giang province) shared: "With favorable soil and climate conditions, and training in planting and caring techniques, the chayote crop is developing well..."

Growing chayote on a trellis is the most convenient option for me, as it makes caring for and harvesting easier. It also helps isolate the plants from pests and diseases, resulting in consistent, beautiful, and high-quality fruit, which has improved my family's economic situation.

With keen insight and a spirit of learning and development, the town of Viet Lam now has nearly 38 households participating in the cultivation of netted trellises, covering over 13 hectares. The area covered by netted trellises is mainly concentrated in groups 7, 10, and 11.

From a fragmented, individual production model, in April 2021, Viet Lam town established a safe vegetable cooperative with 10 participating households, which has now increased to 14 households.

Joining a cooperative to jointly build a brand of safe local vegetables is a clear direction aimed at creating a source of clean, safe food, ensuring food safety for consumers.

Green squash grown on trellises generates hundreds of millions of dong in income annually in Viet Lam town, Vi Xuyen district, Ha Giang province.

As a result, each hectare of vegetables and fruits grown on trellises yields an average income of 230 million VND. Depending on the area, each household earns an average of 160-200 million VND per year, with some households earning over 300 million VND per year.

Developing a model for growing vegetables on trellises, aimed at shifting the crop structure, creating stable jobs, and increasing income for the town's residents, has achieved initial success.

However, most of the produce from these local farmers still reaches consumers' dinner tables primarily through local markets or familiar family-owned business relationships. This inevitably leads to fluctuating prices and unstable sales outlets.

Understanding this, the People's Committee of Viet Lam town regularly organizes training courses on science and technology, advising people to plant crops suitable to the local soil conditions, and not to plant a single type of crop indiscriminately, to avoid a situation where supply exceeds demand.

"During the production process, the authorities guide farmers to always pay close attention to strictly controlling the stages of soil preparation, fertilizer use, and adhering to VietGAP procedures to create a brand and a market position for the town's vegetables...", affirmed Mr. Pham Van Thuy - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Viet Lam town, Vi Xuyen district (Ha Giang province).
