AFCON kicks off in Morocco in less than two weeks, bringing together a host of Premier League stars such as Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush, Bryan Mbeumo, and Amad Diallo. For Onana, the tournament could also be a reunion with two of his Manchester United teammates, if he is indeed included in the official squad.
The problem is that internal turmoil has made Onana's future unpredictable. Coach Marc Brys – who called up Onana – was sacked by the President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), Samuel Eto'o, just three weeks before the opening match against Gabon. Eto'o accused Brys of dishonesty, unprofessionalism, and inciting player rebellion.
Immediately after this decision, assistant coach David Pagou was appointed as interim coach and promptly removed Onana from the squad, replacing him with goalkeeper Edouard Sombang – who hadn't even played for the past six months. But Brys unexpectedly declared that he was still the valid coach, simultaneously announcing a different list, which included Onana, and proceeding with his own preparation plan for AFCON.
Two squad lists, two coaches claiming to be the "legitimate" ones, have left Cameroonian football in a paradoxical situation. Both lineups include Bryan Mbeumo and Carlos Baleba, but the biggest difference lies in the position of Onana – the center of the power struggle between Eto'o and Brys.
The deadline for submitting the official roster to CAF is December 11th, and no one knows which list will be approved. According to SunSport , the Cameroonian government and FECAFOOT are holding emergency meetings to find a solution, but the chaos is causing many players to worry that the team's morale will be severely affected ahead of Africa's most important tournament.
