At the Christian Social Union (CSU) party congress in Munich, Bavaria (southern Germany), Markus Söder was re-elected as the party's chairman, the only party represented in the state.
According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Germany, Bavarian State Premier Söder was re-elected as head of the CSU – the "sister" party of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) at the federal level – just about two weeks before the Bavarian state parliamentary elections , scheduled for October 8th.
The election results show that Söder won 96.56% of the 669 valid votes at the CSU party convention.
This is the highest result Söder has achieved to date. The last time, two years ago, he only received 87.6% of the vote.
According to analysts, the high approval rating that Söder receives indicates a very high level of unity within the party, which could give the 56-year-old politician an advantage as the state parliamentary elections approach.
In recent polls, the CSU's approval rating has fallen to 36% – the worst result in the party's history.
In his campaign speech ahead of the party congress vote, Söder emphasized his desire to continue leading the state of Bavaria after the state parliamentary elections on October 8th.
He called for increased unity within the party, reaffirming his commitment to continuing the current coalition with liberal voters, but refused to form a coalition with the Green Party, and declared he would not cooperate with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party – which he considered a "threat" to Germany.
In the most recent election in Bavaria in 2018, the CSU party received 37.2% of the vote, a drop of more than 10 percentage points and its worst result since 1950.
