At the Christian Social Union (CSU) party congress in Munich, Bavaria (Southern Germany), Mr. Markus Söder was re-elected as Chairman of the only party present in this state.
According to a VNA correspondent in Germany, Bavarian State Premier Söder was re-elected as head of the CSU party – the “sister” party of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) at the federal level – just about 2 weeks before the Bavarian state parliamentary election , scheduled to take place on October 8.
Election results showed that Mr. Söder won 96.56% of the 669 valid votes at the CSU party congress.
This is Mr. Söder's highest result to date. The last time, two years ago, he received only 87.6% of the vote.
According to analysts, the high approval rating that Mr. Söder received shows a very high level of unity within the party, which could bring advantages to this 56-year-old politician when the state parliamentary election is about to take place.
In recent polls, the CSU's support has fallen to 36% – the worst result in the party's history.
In a campaign speech before the vote at the party congress, Mr. Söder emphasized his desire to continue leading the state of Bavaria after the state parliamentary election on October 8.
He called for increased unity within the party, affirming his intention to continue the current alliance with liberal voters, but refused to form an alliance with the Green Party, and declared that he would not cooperate with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party - a party he considered a "danger" to Germany.
In the most recent election in 2018 in Bavaria, the CSU party received 37.2% of the vote, down more than 10 percentage points and the party's worst result since 1950./.
