On October 12, Steve Scalise, the nominee of the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, withdrew from the race for Speaker of the House.
Speaking to reporters, Steve Scalise announced that he would withdraw his candidacy for Speaker of the House after Republicans in the legislature failed to reach a consensus on his nomination.
Earlier that day, in closed-door talks, Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives failed to narrow their differences and approve the nomination of Steve Scalise.
Congressman Steve Scalise, 58, representing Louisiana, is the second most influential Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives. Despite his nomination, he did not secure the 217 votes needed for the nomination.
In related developments, the US House of Representatives has been without a leader for the past nine days after its former Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, was removed from office last week. A vote to elect a new Speaker to replace McCarthy was scheduled for October 11th (US time) but was canceled.
