Speaking at the 4th Conference of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Executive Board for the 2020-2025 term, Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Tran Quang Luu Quang said he received about 12 messages reflecting on the issue of students having to go to school on Saturdays.

According to the feedback, the reason students have to attend extra classes on Saturdays is because they only have 7 lessons a day, not 8 lessons as in previous years.

According to Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Tran Luu Quang, if students only have 7 lessons a day, plus life skills training programs, then they would be required to attend classes on Saturdays. This regulation is facing much opposition.

According to Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the organization of 7 lessons per day for students is in accordance with newly issued regulations from the Ministry of Education and Training .

In addition to the above regulations, the Ministry of Education and Training also instructs localities to flexibly organize supplementary activities. Accordingly, besides the 7 lessons of academic subjects per day, an 8th lesson can be added with content focusing on life skills training and development.

Previously, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training instructed schools that organize classes for two sessions per day not to schedule classes on Saturday mornings.

According to Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, approximately 70-80% of schools in the city currently organize classes for two sessions per day and do not teach on Saturday mornings. However, about 24 primary schools still hold classes on Saturdays, mainly in localities in the former Binh Duong area.

Mr. Hieu stated that in these areas, the population is increasing rapidly, many schools have more than 100 classes, and there is a shortage of subject-specific classrooms, so additional classes have to be scheduled on Saturdays. Furthermore, some parents also wish for their children to learn life skills, so schools respond by organizing classes on Saturdays.

According to Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Tran Luu Quang, the requirement for students to attend school on Saturdays stems from exceptional cases, requests from parents, and the disparity between infrastructure and the rate of population growth in the area.

However, he suggested that the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training review the situation to prevent it from continuing. Regarding the integration of life skills training programs, the Department needs to research suitable methods for effective implementation. The City Party Secretary emphasized that the people expect the new Ho Chi Minh City to become a model locality in this regard.
