During his most recent visit to the U.S., President Zelensky went to the White House to meet with President Biden just weeks before his successor is to be determined in the November presidential election. Biden announced a new aid package of nearly $8 billion for Ukraine. President Zelensky called it "a great help." This aid includes $5.5 billion directed by the president for the Department of Defense to "allocate the remaining security assistance allocated to Ukraine at the end of his term," as well as $2.4 billion in national security assistance. The president also stated that the United States would provide Ukraine with joint strike weapons, capable of long-range strikes, along with other security measures.
"Let me be clear: Russia will not win the war," Biden said before meeting with Zelensky. "Russia will not win. Ukraine will win, and we will continue to stand with you every step of the way." The White House visit underscored the strong support of Democratic leaders for Ukraine in its fight against Russia. During the September presidential debate, Trump was asked twice whether he wanted Ukraine to win the war. Both times he dodged the question, avoiding saying he wanted a U.S. ally to win. Instead, he said, " I want the war to end." Zelensky had given a speech to the UN General Assembly in New York, in which he appealed for support. "I want peace for the people — real peace and just peace. And I am asking for your support, from all the nations of the world . We are not dividing the world," he said. Biden and Zelensky will meet again on October 12 in Germany, according to the White House.
