Earlier this week, Lukashenko said that those seeking to drag his country into conflict "will pay a heavy price for it," demanding answers from Kyiv regarding the bus attack and other "provocations." The attack in Russia's Bryansk region injured six minors and killed the wife of a Belarusian school football coach who was with the young players at a Russian beach.
Kyiv denied carrying out the attack, while Zelensky stated that Lukashenko himself must be "honest" and prove Minsk's peaceful intentions by dismantling air defense systems and relay stations along the border with Ukraine.

"I think a week is enough for him to accomplish this," the Ukrainian leader declared at a press conference in Kyiv on June 19. "If he doesn't do it, we will."
Lukashenko has repeatedly asserted that Belarus has no intention of engaging in a war against any country and "does not threaten anyone." However, Zelensky declared that "there is no need for meaningless words" and issued an implicit threat to Belarus's oil refining industry.
"Just like his oil refining industry," Zelensky said, stating that Minsk is one of Russia's "main" suppliers of petroleum products. "Can this be prevented? I'm sure that's within his capabilities."
As a close ally of Russia, Belarus has largely remained outside the conflict since 2022, while simultaneously calling on Moscow and Kyiv to engage in dialogue and expressing its willingness to support a diplomatic solution. In September 2025, President Lukashenko stated that he was ready to meet privately with Zelensky to negotiate compromise terms, but the Ukrainian leader rejected the offer. In November 2025, Minsk released 31 Ukrainian citizens from detention in a "goodwill gesture" at the request of Kyiv and US President Donald Trump, who was also seeking to mediate the conflict.
Over the past few weeks, Zelensky has repeatedly accused Belarus of posing a significant threat and warned of a possible preemptive strike. Earlier this year, the commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces warned that Kyiv had identified around 500 potential military and logistical targets across Belarus.
