OpenAI has just announced a series of important updates to the ChatGPT platform, most notably renaming the "Reasoning Shortcut" feature to "Think" and integrating it into a separate button in the input bar.
The “Think” button acts as a model switcher, activating the o1 reasoning model. While it’s available on all models, it’s currently only available for o1. However, OpenAI is expected to expand support for the new “o3 mini” model, which is expected to launch as soon as January 31.
The "o3 mini" model is considered OpenAI's next step in optimizing reasoning capabilities. This is a lighter version of the "o3" model, which is faster in response and consumes fewer resources while maintaining high performance on tasks such as programming, math and science .
OpenAI positions the “o3 mini” as an upgrade from the “o1 mini,” with more advanced simulated reasoning techniques to handle complex problems.
Notably, the “o3 mini” will be offered for free to all ChatGPT users. This is seen as a strategic move to compete with other AI models such as Google’s Gemini 2.0 Pro and xAI’s Grok 3.
Along with the launch of the “o3 mini,” OpenAI has also upgraded its flagship GPT-4o model. The new version updates the knowledge base to June 2024, allowing the model to better handle recent events and trends.
In addition, GPT-4o also improves image analysis capabilities, while improving performance in STEM fields such as mathematics and programming.
Another interesting point is that the new model responds better to emojis, reflecting the change in user communication trends. After receiving feedback from users, OpenAI updated the interface with a new version that adds a three-dot menu to optimize the experience.
