According to Reuters on March 29, a Thai woman gave birth while a hospital was being evacuated due to the impact of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28.
The pregnant woman was 36-year-old Kanthong Saenmuangshin. That day, she went to the Police General Hospital in Bangkok for a routine prenatal check-up. However, just as the ground began to shake, she unexpectedly went into labor.
When the earthquake struck, all hospital staff immediately evacuated patients to the ground floor and out of the building to ensure their safety.
While being escorted down five flights of stairs, Mrs. Kanthong's water unexpectedly broke. The labor pains overwhelmed her, causing her to panic and fear she might give birth right there on the stairs.
"I told my child not to go out right now," Kanthong recalled with a smile mixed with nervousness.
As soon as she was brought back to the hospital, medical staff quickly placed her on a bed and provided all their support. Amidst the chaos, surrounded by doctors and nurses racing against time, she successfully gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
"For me, it was truly a shock," she confided, recalling the moment she gave birth amidst the earthquake.
At the time, her husband was at work and couldn't be there to witness this important moment. However, seeing her daughter born safely, Kanthong felt relieved and overwhelmed with happiness.
The baby girl was born just as the earthquake was coming to an end, which multiplied her joy many times over.
The couple decided to name their child "Mink." Despite being born under unusual circumstances, they insisted they would not choose any name related to the devastating earthquake.
The story of baby Mink's birth amidst the earthquake quickly captured media attention, becoming a heartwarming beacon of light in the midst of the devastating natural disaster.
