According to the Financial Times , OpenAI is preparing to mass-produce AI chips next year, which could provide massive computing power for the artificial intelligence platforms they operate and reduce their reliance on Nvidia.

Sources suggest that OpenAI designed this custom AI chip in collaboration with semiconductor manufacturer Broadcom – which recently announced a new customer with an order worth up to $10 billion .

The American chipmaker did not name the customer, but Financial Times sources confirmed it was OpenAI. Furthermore, the company apparently has no plans to sell the chips externally, intending to use them only in its internal hardware systems.

This move is similar to the approach taken by other tech giants like Google and Amazon, who design custom chips to cut costs, consolidate supply, and reduce reliance on Nvidia.

Since 2023, Reuters has reported that OpenAI began exploring the possibility of manufacturing its own AI chips after Sam Altman blamed a GPU shortage for affecting the speed and reliability of its APIs.

Previously, the news agency also reported that OpenAI was collaborating with both Broadcom and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to develop its own products. The Financial Times did not specify whether OpenAI still maintains a partnership with TSMC.

Following the launch of GPT-5, Altman announced the changes OpenAI is making to meet "growing demand." In addition to prioritizing paid ChatGPT users, he stated that OpenAI will double its computing power "in the next five months."

Custom AI chips, known as XPUs, the same type OpenAI is developing, will eventually capture a large share of the AI ​​hardware market. Currently, Nvidia remains the leading name in the industry. The company recently announced revenue for the second quarter, ending July 27th, up 56% year-on-year.
