According to the Financial Times , OpenAI is preparing to mass produce AI chips next year, which could provide massive computing power to the artificial intelligence platforms they operate and reduce their dependence on Nvidia.

Sources say OpenAI designed this custom AI chip in partnership with semiconductor manufacturer Broadcom – which just announced a new customer, with an order worth up to $10 billion .

The US chipmaker did not name the customer, but sources told the Financial Times it was OpenAI. It also appears the company has no plans to sell the chips outside the company, only use them in its internal hardware systems.

The move is similar to the approach taken by other tech giants like Google and Amazon, which design custom chips to cut costs, consolidate supply and reduce their reliance on Nvidia.

Since 2023, Reuters reported that OpenAI has begun exploring the possibility of making its own AI chips after Sam Altman blamed the GPU shortage for affecting the speed and reliability of APIs.

Previously, the news agency also reported that OpenAI had partnered with both Broadcom and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to develop its own products. The Financial Times did not say whether OpenAI still maintains its partnership with TSMC.

Following the launch of GPT-5, Altman announced changes OpenAI was making to meet “growing demand.” In addition to prioritizing paid ChatGPT users, he asserted that OpenAI would double its computing power “over the next five months.”

Custom AI chips called XPUs, the same ones OpenAI is developing, will eventually take a big share of the AI hardware market. For now, Nvidia remains the industry leader. The company recently reported a 56% increase in revenue for the second quarter, which ended July 27, compared to the same period last year.
