Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Khanh Thanh suddenly passed away

After the sudden passing of Associate Professor Pham Van Tinh, the literary and scientific community in Hanoi received another unexpected sad news: Associate Professor Dr. Tran Khanh Thanh - Vice President of the Central Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Art - passed away on the evening of May 11.

Mr. Tran Khanh Linh - the eldest son of Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Khanh Thanh - shared with Tuoi Tre Online that his father passed away at around 8:00 p.m. on May 11 at the hospital, due to a stroke, at the age of 68.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen The Ky - Vice President of the Central Council of Theory - was shocked by the consecutive sad news of two literary friends with whom he had been closely associated in work and life for the past several decades.

Associate Professor Tran Khanh Thanh - a serious scientist

Mr. Ky said that both Associate Professors Pham Van Tinh and Tran Khanh Thanh studied in class 19 of the Faculty of Literature at Hanoi University of Science, both enlisted in the army while they were students, fought at the northern border, then returned to continue their studies and devoted their whole lives to literature and the Vietnamese language.

Both passed away suddenly from the same cause, stroke, on two consecutive days, surprising and saddening their families, friends, colleagues, and students.

Associate Professor Tran Khanh Thanh was a classmate of Mr. Nguyen The Ky in the Literature Department of the University of General Sciences, and was three years older than Mr. Ky. After retiring from the Literature Department of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Mr. Thanh had the opportunity to work with Mr. Nguyen The Ky at the Central Council for Literature and Art Theory and Criticism.

Mr. Nguyen The Ky is the chairman of the council, and Associate Professor Tran Khanh Thanh is the full-time vice chairman of the council for the 2021 - 2026 term.

After the Central Council of Literature and Art Criticism merged with the Central Council of Theory, Associate Professor Tran Khanh Thanh became deputy head of the Subcommittee of Literature and Art Criticism of the Central Council of Theory.

Mr. Ky assessed Associate Professor Tran Khanh Thanh as a serious, careful, dedicated scientist who has made many contributions to training literature students for many years and has helped a lot in the theoretical and critical work of the Central Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Art.

In the recent merger of the Central Council of Literature and Art Criticism into the Central Council of Theory, Associate Professor Tran Khanh Thanh had the great merit of "bringing the council ship to the new port in a successful way, a complete migration".

Associate Professor Tran Khanh Thanh also left behind many valuable works on literary and art criticism theory.

Erudite , progressive literary theorist , devoted teacher

Associate Professor Dr. Doan Le Giang assessed Associate Professor Tran Khanh Thanh as an erudite and progressive literary theorist; a dedicated and serious teacher.

"To me, he was a very sincere and dear senior... Knowing that life is imperfect, unfinished, and impermanent, hearing the news of his passing still felt sudden!", Mr. Doan Le Giang expressed.

To his students, Associate Professor Tran Khanh Thanh is "a teacher with a spirit of steel and an artistic soul".

Associate Professor Tran Khanh Thanh was born in 1957 in Nghe An.

In 1974, he studied literature at Hanoi University.

In 1980, he and 400 lecturers and students of the University of General Sciences at that time joined the army, fought in Regiment 877, Ha Tuyen Military Command, protecting the borders of Meo Vac and Dong Van districts ( Ha Giang ).

In 1983, he was discharged from the army and returned to work, teaching at the literature department.

After retirement, he joined the Central Council for Literature and Art Theory and Criticism.
