According to RIA Novosti , Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a regular press briefing on October 26 that a Hamas delegation was visiting Russia. However, she did not provide further details about the visit.
According to RIA Novosti sources, the Hamas delegation included senior leader Abu Marzook.
Zakharova said that Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Baghiri Kani is also visiting Russia and holding talks with his counterpart Mikhail Galuzin. Baghiri Kani is also the head of Iran's nuclear negotiating team.
Russia has relations with many countries in the Middle East, including Israel, Iran, Palestine, and Hamas – the armed group that currently controls the Gaza Strip.
The Hamas delegation's visit comes as the conflict with Israel is about to enter its fourth week and continues to escalate.
Moscow has repeatedly stated that the current crisis in the Middle East is due to a diplomatic failure on the part of the United States. Russia has called on Israel and Hamas to cease fire and resume negotiations in order to find a peaceful solution.
However, Russia's draft resolution on ending the conflict in the Gaza Strip was not adopted by the UN Security Council on October 25. The draft resolution proposed by the United States was also vetoed.
The Israeli-Hamas conflict has claimed the lives of approximately 8,000 people in both the Gaza Strip and Israel. Despite this, the fighting shows no signs of abating. Israel has declared it will continue its ground offensive in Gaza.
Israeli tanks and bulldozers launched a lightning raid on the Gaza Strip on the night of October 25th and the early morning of October 26th.
Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said: "Through the raid, we eliminated enemy fighters, neutralized threats, dismantled explosives, and defused ambushes to create conditions for the next phases of ground operations."
