Wolves shock Liverpool. |
In the 94th minute at Molineux, Andre scored the decisive goal that helped bottom-of-the-table teams beat reigning champions Liverpool 2-1, creating one of the most dramatic moments of the season.
Before kick-off, Wolves were 14 points behind safety with only 9 games remaining. A comeback seemed impossible. The reality was even harsher considering their remaining fixtures. They faced Brentford, West Ham, Leeds United, Tottenham, Sunderland, Brighton, Fulham, and Burnley – all top-half opponents. To dream of a miracle, Wolves would need to win at least 6 of their last 8 games. That task was like climbing a steep mountain.
This season, Wolves hit rock bottom when they went 19 games without a win, the worst record in Premier League history, surpassing Sheffield United's 17-game winless streak in the 2020/21 season. More broadly, the record for the longest winless start in England's top flight belongs to Bolton Wanderers with 22 games in the 1902/03 season.
However, last week's victory against Aston Villa helped Rob Edwards' team reach 13 points, enough to avoid the worst record in Premier League history: Derby County's 11-point finish in the 2007/08 season. Derby County were also the first team ever to be relegated (March 29, 2008). At least, Wolves avoided repeating these two embarrassing mistakes.

Wolves haven't given up yet. |
Last season, Southampton set a record for the earliest relegation in terms of the number of rounds played, officially saying goodbye to the Premier League at the beginning of April 2025 despite having 7 games left to play and finishing the season with 12 points, the second lowest total points in history.
The challenge for Wolves, therefore, is not just about points, but also about belief. Defeating Liverpool showed they haven't given up. In a battle for survival, spirit sometimes makes all the difference. If they continue to maintain their form and capitalize on every small opportunity, the "Wolves" could absolutely stage a spectacular comeback.
Wolves are currently 11 points behind Nottingham Forest in safety and have played two more games. Clearly, a miracle is still a long way off, but the hope is gradually being rekindled. After their thrilling victory against Liverpool, Wolves at least proved they are not ready to say goodbye.
