These days, visiting Phieng Cam, you'll find the hillsides, front yards, and roadsides ablaze with the vibrant yellow of persimmon orchards. The persimmon season has begun, and the locals are delighted that this year's harvest is bountiful and the prices are good.

From the center of the commune, following the winding concrete road, you reach the persimmon orchard of Ms. Lo Thi Kim's family in Nong Tau Thai village. The orchard is planted right next to her house, lush and full of fruit. Ms. Kim shared: "In 2014, seeing some households in the commune growing seedless persimmons and earning a stable income, I learned to do the same. Persimmon trees are very suitable for the soil and climate here, they tolerate drought and cold well, and produce sweet fruit, so traders buy them directly from the orchard. Currently, my family has 1 hectare of persimmons intercropped with other fruit trees, yielding nearly 10 tons of fruit each year. This season, persimmons are in season, and traders from Phu Tho province come to buy them at an average price of 15-17 thousand VND/kg."

The people of Phiêng Cằm commune are delighted that this year's persimmon harvest is bountiful and the prices are good.

Continuing our visit to the persimmon orchard of Mr. Song A Phenh's family in Phieng Phu village, we found that his family currently has 500 persimmon trees, 300 of which are currently producing fruit. Mr. Phenh said: "Persimmon trees are not picky about soil; they can be planted in clusters or interspersed at the foot of hills, along ponds, streams, or dry fields. Caring for them is quite simple; just fertilize and weed, no pruning or shaping is needed, and the trees still bear fruit consistently. Every year, my family harvests over 8 tons of fruit. This year, traders came directly to the orchard to buy the persimmons, saving my family the effort of transporting them for sale."

Located at an altitude of over 1,000 meters above sea level, Phiêng Cằm commune enjoys a cool climate and fertile soil. Since 2000, the government has supported the people in planting over 500 persimmon trees. Initially, the villagers only planted them around their houses for personal consumption, but realizing the trees were well-suited to the soil and climate, they expanded the cultivation into a commercial crop.

Currently, the entire commune has over 30 hectares of seedless persimmons concentrated in the villages of Nong Tau Thai, Phieng Phu, and Nong Tau Mong, with a yield of over 600 tons of fruit per year. Seedless persimmons bloom from April and are harvested from the end of September to mid-October. Ripe persimmons have a beautiful yellow color, but are still astringent and inedible when first picked. After soaking in clean water for 3-4 days and nights, the astringency disappears, and the fruit becomes sweet; at that point, simply rinse and drain before enjoying.

People in Phiêng Cằm commune are harvesting persimmons.

Previously, farmers only sold persimmons individually or to local traders at unstable prices. Now, traders from provinces like Phu Tho, Hung Yen , and Thai Nguyen come to buy directly from the orchards, even placing deposits to purchase entire orchards while the fruit is still unripe. This year, persimmons are fetching good prices, which has reassured farmers and encouraged them to invest in proper care, leading to improved yields and quality.

Additionally, there's recently emerged a trend of using rose branches with fruit to decorate spaces. Each rose branch can retain its beauty for 1-2 weeks, and the care is as simple as cut flowers; just trim the base, prune neatly, and change the water daily.

Mr. Dang Tien Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phieng Cam commune, said: The commune has coordinated with specialized agencies to guide people on techniques for planting and caring for persimmons to improve quality and yield. At the same time, it is actively seeking partners to support product consumption. Currently, the commune is piloting a production model linked to deep processing, such as dried persimmons (soft and crispy), establishing a persimmon farming cooperative, developing OCOP products, and promoting the Phieng Cam seedless persimmon brand. The goal is to expand the market, help people develop their economy , and increase their income from persimmon cultivation in a sustainable way.

After many years of being cultivated in Phiêng Cằm, the persimmon tree has proven its quality and economic effectiveness. The Phiêng Cằm persimmon brand is becoming increasingly well-known to consumers, expanding consumption, increasing income for the people, and promoting socio-economic development of the locality.
