Jones is now an assistant coach at his former club. |
At the age of 33, Jones returned to the club he had been with since his youth. Prior to that, he joined the Blackburn academy in 2002, spending seven years honing his skills before being promoted to the first team in 2009. During his two professional seasons at Ewood Park, the former English central defender impressed greatly and was signed by Manchester United in 2011.
At Old Trafford, Jones spent 12 years, scoring 6 goals and providing 8 assists in 229 appearances across all competitions. However, his career was repeatedly hampered by persistent injuries, leading to an early retirement. Three years after hanging up his boots, Jones returned to Blackburn as a member of the first-team coaching staff under new manager Michael O'Neill.
O'Neill recently took over the team on a short-term contract until June, alongside his work managing the Northern Ireland national team. For Jones, this is a promising turning point that will help him gain more experience in his fledgling coaching career.
In fact, Jones became familiar with coaching early on, having assisted the Manchester United U18 team during the 2023/24 season. "I am an ambitious person and I want to show that in a coaching role. I feel ready for this challenge," Jones shared.
However, Jones' task is certainly not easy. Blackburn are currently 22nd out of 24 teams in the Championship. The team needs a strong boost in the remainder of the season to avoid the risk of relegation to the English second division next season.
